Radeon 9800 XT lockup - Do I have a Video Card problem?

I was playing the PC game Call Of Duty on my machine when the game froze and I received a popup message that the VPU encountered an error (Something about the VPU not responding), and asked if I would like an error report generated and sent. (Which I did, it connected to the internet and sent the file). I was then back on my desktop, but it was as if the brightness was set to full. I restarted my computer and got back into windows. I ran Call Of Duty again, and I played it for about five more minutes, then the monitor went black, and gave the "No Signal" message on the screen. The sound from the game was still going, although in a short loop. It seems to me that the video card quit responding to the system. I pulled the plug on the computer and rebooted.

Back in windows, the monitor refresh rate was set back to 60Hz, rather than the usual 85Hz, which I changed back. I have not played the game since then.

It seems to me that the video card was overheating. I am not overclocking anything on my system. I have a case with four fans, and I do not have the side on it for improved airflow. There is no PCI card in the slot closest to the video card.

I think I have the file that was generated by the VPU. It is called "crash" and was placed in \windows\system. I could provide it to you, if you wish. Also, like I mentioned above, it was sent to ATI.

Please let me know if this is something that I should think about an RMA to replace the card. The game was my friends, which he took with him, so I will not be running the game any more. I will monitor the situation with my games to see if I have any other problems.

Here is some information on my computer:

Video Card: Powercolor Radeon 9800XT
Motherboard: ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe
CPU: Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
CD-ROM: Lite-On 52x32x52
Hard Drive: 2x Western Digital 200 Gig SATA in RAID 0 configuration
Memory: 2 x 512 Corsair Low-Latency paired PC3200 DIMMs
Case: Cooler Master
Sound Card: Soundblaster Audigy 2
Operating System: Windows XP Professional
DirectX: 9.0b
Video Drivers: 6.14.10.6396

Information on my system

Please give me some advice on this situation.

Thank you,

Kent

Have you tried different driver versions? Even if you have to rollback to older drivers? Have has problem occur in any other games? Have you looked to see if there was any new patches that needed applying to for the game?

Power Supply: Antec 480w TrueBlue

This has not happened in any other game that I have played, but I don't have any other games that are that graphic intensive. (I have played UT2003k, Icewind Dale, and Morrowind on this system).

I have not tried any different drivers, either for the video card, or the game. (But I have uninstalled the game because a friend was just over showing it to me, I don't own it).

Thanks for the advice!

if it hasn't happened in other games, then it may be that ati bug for call of duty.

Disable fast write and see if it happens again.

no need to RMA the card its just a Call of duty bug. It should be fixed with the new 3.10 cats. I was getting the same VPU error and I would also have to reset my rig. Have you ever had this VPU error in any other games?
