i currently have a ati radeon 9800 pro (128MB, 256-bit). But I used linux as my primary operating system and ati doesn't seem to be a good choice for video cards in linux. so i am going to get rid of my 9800 pro and get an nvidia card. i'm currently looking into a MSI fx 5900 xt (also 128 MB, 256-bit), and i was wondering how the performance of that card would be vs my 9800 pro? is it comparable? I would really like to retain the perfomance that i get in windows (since i still play a few games in windows). are there other cards that would be closer to the 9800?

6600 GT? An FX5900XT won't be all that good for DX9 games, but probably is a hair better than the 9800 Pro at OpenGL (based on history). A 6600 GT would be a little bit of an upgrade, but I'm not sure of how much increase it will yield over your 9800 Pro.

ati drivers are just as good as nvidia drivers. but if you were going to get a new card i would recommend the 6600gt best bang for the buck. but since the 9800pro is good enough might just fix the problem you are having. good luckzor
