Radeon 9800 Pro Voltage Problems

I installed a newly RMA'd 9800 Pro 128 MB (built-by-ATI) and the system refused to start, not a peep, no fans, nothing. The LED next to the AGP slot was glowing red. The manual says that this is a power protection circuit that prevents you from using a 3.3V AGP card. Huh?

I put another card in the slot (a Radeon 7500 Pro) and the system booted just fine. I really don't want to try the replacement 9800 in another machine for fear of it doing damage.

Any ideas here? Is the replacement card bad? I did confirm that the molex plug supplying the card was delivering power.

Thanks.

OK, I did a little digging and now I am even more confused. I was under the impression that all modern video cards were 1.5V, yet on ATI's website they have a chart that shows some that support AGP signaling of 3.3V and 1.5V (ex: Radeon 9500). Plus lots of pictures of graphics card configurations (AGP slot and adapter keys). To be honest I have never given this a second thought (voltage that is). Is this just a bad card or is there more to it?

Thanks.

well, your mobo supports only 1.5v, but according to ati's site, the 9800 supports agp signaling of 1.5v and 0.8v, so you shouldn't be having any problems... do you have a different video card you can try using to see if that works?

his ATI 7500 works fine.. which is definitely strange because if any card would be 3.3V, that would be it. (although its still too new to be 3.3V)
I'd go ahead and try the 9800 Pro in another system to be honest..

OK, I put the card in another system with an A7N8X mobo and got the same result, no power-up and the red LED by the AGP slot is lit. Switched back to the original card in the box (a MAtrox G550) and it booted up just fine.

So is my "new" card dead?

I had the exact same issue with a refurbished 9700 pro that I purchased from newegg. It would actually power up in my old KT133 based A7V, but not in my A7N8X (the red light). I RMA'd it and got a 9800 instead and that one worked. If I were you I'd just return it again -_-)

ATI wants me to sub another 8x AGP card, which I din't have, to rule out the mobo. Hopefully their reply will be that they are sending another card......
