Radeon 9800 Pro Problem

I recently finished installing some new upgrades, including a Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro. I tested it out on some PC games and 3DMark2003, and I noticed some flickering lines/shapes that randomly appear. I can't figure out how to get rid of them. When I played Call of Duty, I didn't see the lines at first, but after awhile they started to appear. I installed the latest catalyst drivers and I've made sure that my monitor refresh rates are good. My old video card(GeForce4) worked great with this monitor. I've also tried to experiment with various options/settings such as vsync and fast writes, but I don't really know what they do. What might cause this problem? Could my 9800 Pro be defective? Any help is appreciated.

If it only happens after the game has been running for a while, it's probably heat-related. Might wanna look into case air-flow. Also see if the hsf is seated on the die, it might be resting on the shim instead. Can't go wrong with the rma though, chances are even if you get this card working its not gonna oc too well if it is a heat problem.

I never though heat was the issue, but I suppose its possible. My GeForce4 never had any problems with my case cooling, and I haven't taken out any fans for the 9800 Pro. The flickering problem never occurs when I'm in 2D modes, like on my desktop or browsing the internet, only in games. On some games, I see the flickering right away. What did you mean when you said to check if the hsf is resting on the die? Is the "die" the surface/core of video card below the fan?

Mate, you have the well known 'rolling lines, shimmering lines, faint horizontal lines problems. I have got it too with my R9500Pro that is. It is not always there, but it comes and goes. Mine is Sapphire too, I can tell you their tech support is just horrible. In fact they are aware of this problem but refuse to RMA. Bad luck for you mate!!!

Yes your 9800Pro is defective.
But you can try to use the DVI and it might go away.
Some ppl cant get rid of it.
