Radeon 9800 Pro Brought To It's Knees (Fixed link)

This is a problem I noticed w/ my gf4, and thought it might go away after upgrading video cards...
Right now my gaming time is divided between America's Army, Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2, and X2: Wolverines Revenge (I decided to get it off the shelf after condemning it, it's MUCH better w/ a gamepad)

Anyways, in NFS:HP2, there are a couple of maps w/ waterfalls or rivers. I don't know what it is about these waterfalls and rivers (they do look amazing) but even as I whiz by them at 180mph, they cause my system to CHUG. While I don't know how to measure the framerate, I would guess it's down in the teens. This is on the system in my profile (3ghz, 1GB ram, 9800 Pro) all at stock speeds. And just to give you guys an idea, I took a screenshot.

Here!

It uses DX 8.1... If my rig can't handle 8.1 water, DX9 water will be death. Any ideas? Athlon64 time?

EDIT: Fixed Link

Im not sure which rig this on but both of yours seem like they should play those games perfectly. If I were you I would format your hard drive and reinstall Windows. Reinstalling Windows Service Packs first, DirectX second, drivers last. If you dont feel like this (it will probably give you the best results though) I would do a search for Driver Cleaner and remove the drivers that way.

Could it be paging from the HDD? Only loading water sound effects when needed? Get a fast HDD and more memory.

I have 2 80gb 8mb cache drives in a RAID0, they read at 74mbps, and I have 1GB of RAM.

Besides, it remains choppy as I stare at it.

BTW, NFSHP2 is the only game I get slowdown in.... Anyone else have problem games? Other than Halo? 😛

just a fyi
try Fraps to see your frames per second in any game, nice little utility

try adjusting various video settings and see if something in makes it run smoothly, maybe a driver issue? some advanced video option messing something up?

Well I mean, it doesn't disrupt my gameplay or anything, because i"m going by it really fast... But when I stop and point my car at it, like in the screenshot, it's obviously very choppy. I just thought it was interesting.

I could turn the settings down... but I didn't sink in $400 for less than the best.

take a WILD guess why your 9800pro is slowing down. even the HL engine slows to about 50-60fps under fair load at 1280*960 with 4xAA and 8xAF, when I had it there.

Could it simply be the game's bad keyframe animation with no interpolation? If so, it could simply be that the waterfall is animated in a sloppy slow framerate providing the illusion that the game is slowed down (I've seen this in other games). Does the game have a framerate counter that actually drops?

I also have a power rig (Barton @ 3200Xp, 1gb corsair ddr, 9800pro) and I used to play NFS2:HP2 all the time.

I also ran it at 1280x1024x32 with 4xAA and 16xAF...until I ran into slow downs on some of the maps using high speed vehicles. Turning the AA down to 2x and the AF down to 8x made a world of difference. No slow downs whatsoever, ever.

Btw, I never installed the patches.

Try uninstalling GAYgart(smartgart). It sometimes disables Items like; AGP 4 or 8x, agp reads, agp writes, Fastwrites, etc. It disabled my agp Writes and was keeping me at 70fps on all games no matter what i did with IQ settings. Once removed, all was fine!!!!! back up to 130fps!!

heres how

This game runs worse than it should except on the Playstation 2. The xBox, GC, and PC versions while they look better seem real un-optimized.

My 2.53 w/ 9700 pro usually ran it fine, but sometimes it would chug. Simply inacceptable. Tried a nocd hack to see if it would fix it but it didn't. It is a poor port.
