Radeon 9800 Pro-256MB

How much of a difference do you think the extra 128MB of memory will make and is it worth waiting for the Radeon 9800 Pro-256MB? Will Doom 3 see a big benefit from it?

I think they said that the 9800 Pro-256 would also have DDR2 memory not DDR. I'll try to find out where I might seen that and post it here.

Yeah PJ, I just did a search on pricewatch and a company is advertising the 256MB Radeon 9800 Pro and they specifically say DDR2. The pricing is $499 U.S. (yikes!) for the 256MB model. And here's something new (to me at least), there will be a 128 MB DDR2 version of the Radeo 9800 as well for $449. Hopefully the core clock will get a nice boost as well.

wow 256 DDR2 mem on the 9800 should be nuts, the performance with large textures will surley increase, wonder how high the mem will be clocked, cause if its nearly as high as the GeforceFX then damn that thing will be fast

Anyone with $400-$500 to spend on a card probably has money to upgrade in 18 months by the time the first games to benefit from it are out. Doom3 will fit nicely into 128mb cards, and anything beyond that, you'd want a faster card for anyway.

Edit: Read Carmack's plan, he's talking about 80-90mb scenes.
