Coupled w/ a P4 2.8ghz CPU, will it be good enough to play those new games w/ all eye candy on (at a decent (50-60 framerate)?

Opinions?

I think it will be just fine. Most people do not even have that. HL2 is definetly be very happy with it. Doom3 shoud also work very fast with this card, becaue most of the people do not even have that. SOme people might upgrade their video card to play Doom3, but most will not buy Doom3 unless it's playable on a resonable video card. 9800 is more then reasonable.
I wondered whether to wait for X800 or get 9800. I realized that buying AGP version of X800 did not make much sense, so I got 9800 128M.

Unlikely unless you go to a very low resolution like 800 x 600.

hmm, when i use 1280*1024 the game will most likely to have 30fps. sometiems drop to 20 or 15fps.

i need to put it back to 1024*768 to get a more smooth gameplay like 40fps.
i don't have aa or af

A P4 2.8C and 9800XT can manage 60fps in Far Cry with AA+AF at 800x600, so you should be OK with D3 and HL2 if you reduce AA/AF by a notch or two. You'll probably do better in HL2 than D3, but by how much, I don't know.

hmm, i thought those people who think 1280*1024 is not high enough, so put on aa and af... but at this stage, 800*600 and put on aa/af??? does it really help in graphics/resolution/jigsaw problem?

i have p4-2.8e@3.43, r9800p@xt clock

It all depends what u want. If you just want decent, playable frames with any eye candy that is on by default only, then a GF3 TI200 is capable of rendering what u want. If you want something more then just to play the game, it scales up from that card.

You guys do realize when DOom3 was being touted to come out soon (lol), the Radeon 9700 Pro was the graphics card being used to showcase it right? I'm sure the game will run 60 fps w/ 1280x1024 w/ no AA/AF high options.

We don't know.
If you want to use FC as a reference point ,a system like that, which is similar to mine, could do 10x7 with all eye candy on and no AA/AF and get 40-45 fps.
So I'm guessing that you will be able to run both with all eye candy on and get somethin like 30-50fps.
But definately no more than that.

If anything, AA is more important at low resolutions than high, simply because the stair-stepping effect is magnified with fewer screen pixels. AF should help, too, but I think its benefit is more resolution-independent.
