I need some suggestions to upgrade my OEM HSF on my 9800 pro. Seems the fan will periodically just quit, and I can't even flick it back into spinning.

I also ask as I have noticed a large number of VPU Recovering going on, last time it happened, my fan had stopped. This was about a month or so ago, I took the card out, unplugged the power to it. . . put it back in, gave it power again, and the fan finally worked. But after 14-15 days straight now, seems it has died on me again. I'll prolly end up taking it back out, reseating it, and applying the power to it once more. . . but I think it's time to just replace the hsf.

Any suggestions for a reasonablely priced HSF upgrade? Rumor has it that the AC silencer is a pretty good suggestion, anyone else?

That rumor is true. I like the AC's. You can also look at the Zalman VF700 series as well. It is a much nicer made HS quality wise, but I just like the exhaust on the AC's. Your choice. :)

That VF700 looks like it will work with damn near every card out there. I'm looking for some installation / reviews of it being put on a 9800. I'm liking what I'm seeing about it already from reading some of the other reviews/guides. Much larger price than the base AC, but I'm reading nothing but praise for it, as opposed to a number of poor reviews of the AC on newegg.

I don't put any value on reviews @ the egg what-so-ever. Your choice there :p The VF700 will work fantastic on your gpu. I have used both. Quick run down from my experience w/ the 2...ready? VF700=quieter@idle and cools 1-2C better than AC at idle/louder than the AC@full tilt but cools 1-2C better than AC/overall case temps rose 3-5C (cpu/mobo/case) with the VF700. NV5=well you can deduce from the previous info. You really cant go wrong with either so it depends on what exactly are you looking for.

My trigger finger got fast. Ordered the VF700. Hopefully it will get here by Thurs, or Weds. But honestly, I'm going out of town this weekend, so I'll just start using the laptop only until it gets in. :)

Thanks for the help guys, I'll let you know how it goes.

you need to remember all the reviews at these sites....NewEgg etc......for the most part are done by just regular people who may or may not know anything about the thing they bought other than it was bettr than what they had...or well NewEgg got it delivered verty quickly..lol

The best reviews are from people who you know of on forums like these.....and such...:)

No I know, I spent a fair bit of time googling looking for reviews, but I pretty much went off of the word that I got from here. Thanks again guys. Will be nice to have my desktop back, no way in hell Im taking the chance running it without an operational fan on the card.
