Radeon 9700pro lock ups

Hi i just go the card from Sapphire and it locks up in 3d games.

I didn't overclock it.

The card has 2 cables coming out of it that are supposed to be for external power. I plugged only 1 of them in to the power supply cables. I went on sapphires site and it said the following-

ADDITIONAL POWER CONNECTION REQUIREMENTS

The Radeon 9700Pro must be connected to the computer? power supply to meet its performance and high-speed memory requirements.
In order to supply the ATI Graphics Accelerator card with the necessary power, we have included the Power Extension Cable.
Use the Power Extension Cable to connect the Radeon 9700Pro to the computer? hard Drive power connector.

1. Remove the power cable from the hard drive.
2. Connect the 4-pin connector of the Power Extension Cable to the Radeon 9700Pro power connector.
3. Connect the Power Extension Cable to the power supply connector.
4. Connect the Power Extension Cable to the Hard Drive connector.

does that mean that i have to plug the second cable into my hard drive? if so why? is it to complete the circuit thingy?

yea theres 2 ends and sapphire says that you need to plug it into the hard drive, after im done testing the card on 3dmark03, if it locks up ima go try plugging it into the hd

lock ups can be caused by inproper electrical feeding correct?

We could do with more info like PSU and PC specs etc you`ve,also what video card did you`ve installed before and how did you remove the old drivers?

420 watt power supply

2.4ghz p4 800mhz FSB
512mb DDR Corsair pc3200
Sapphire Radeon 9700pro 128mb
Windows XP SP1
Direct X 9.0b

I just tried running on my geforce 2 and i experinece no lock ups/ issues.

Is there something wrong with the 9700pro? Are other people experiensing this?

Try Driver Cleaner ,follow the instructions included in the readme file,it`s a very good program for cleaning any remaining old ATI or Nvidia driver files.I would recommend you run cab cleaner as well(can be found in tools menu of Driver Cleaner).

Btw disable fastwrites as well since that can cause problems on some systems.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers installed for your system.

does that mean that i have to plug the second cable into my hard drive?
I don't believe so. I think they're just letting you know that it's OK to split the cable between two devices if you like.

i did a clean install of windows xp for this new system so theres no nvidia drivers.

i decided to send the card back for repairs and exchange it, maybe my card was just damaged.

but, if my geforce 2 works, but the 9700pro dosent, that basicly means that its the 9700's fault dosent it? Dont get me wrong i love Ati, and i really want this 9700to work, but i cant run any 3d app without lock ups, opengl or direct3d.

also how do i find out under what temprature its runing at? incase its overheating or something

also how do i test to see if my powersupply is enough? any programs?

the gf2 takes mroe juice then the 9700pro so that could explain the fact that i can run the gf2
