I am haveing problems with my new system. I have an 8X AGP mother board, and i just got my radeon 9700pro. My computer freezes up at random intervals when ever i play graphics intense games, I have to push the front resest as the whoel computer is frozen and when it freezes my monitor acts as though it jsut got disconnect from the computer. I found that when I set my bios setting to 4X AGP that this does not happen, BIG difference from 8X-->4X so i am trying to find what I can do to remedy my problem, I have tried 4 different versions of catalyst drivers from the newest to version 2.5 and still no help. I also have Direct X9. Have any Ideas on to what I could do?

AFAIK, I believe there are some compatibility problems with older revisions of the 9700 on some nForce/Granite Bay/Canterwood mobos when trying to run at AGP 8x. Just run at AGP 4x, there is absolutely no difference in performance between the two.

Try downloading the latest AGP drivers for your motherboard if you have'nt tried that already. And make sure AGP Fast Writes is turned off in bios, and Ati drivers.

I have an N-force mobo, atholon 2500 1.8g and 512DDR 400 ram, AGP fast write was off at 8x agp but on at 4xagp. All hardware has newest drivers. I think that runnign it at 4x sounds like a decent solution for right now.

Hmm, I just sold my 9700 Pro to a friend who uses an Nforce2 motherboard and his AMD rig. No issues with 8X AGP and Fastwrites ON in the bios. This is on the Asus board.

The big difference between AGP 4x and AGP 8x is the name, not the performance. Just stick with AGP 4x if it means a stable system. Is SmartGART choosing 8x for you, or are you forcing it somehow?

Note that Omega says FastWrites should always be off, as it offers little extra speed but many potential problems.
