well, i just got my Powercolor Radeon 9700 Gold today! boy does it kick! i have it running at radeon 9700 Pro speeds so far, and it is super stable. in 3DMark2003, i got a score of about 4300. that seems to be pretty normal for a 2.4 gHz PIV. splinter cell runs great (no suprise) and UT2K3 is GORGEOUS with this card. i can't wait to see how much faster my system is when my (hopefully) C1 2.4B comes in monday. thanks to everyone who advised me just to spend the extra money on the 9700 non-pro! ROCK ON!

Glad you like your card!

I was all set to get a 9700but I've found my 9000 has the TV capture built in (it's not an AIW) which I want to keep for the moment. Don't know how much longer I can resist the lure of the 9700 :(

Don't forget to apply the 9800pro softmod! Or you can wait a few days for the initial high to wear off and then apply it. It'll be like upgrading twice in a week! :D

Suposedly the 9800 softmod won't be needed once the Cat. 3.3's are released. What ram speed rating does the PowerColor use?

Hey Guys! New to this forum. Kinda have a stupid question for you. Just how safe is this soft mod thingy? Kinda want to try it with my Hercules 9700 Pro. Does it flash the BIOS or is it just a driver mod?

Driver mod I believe no flashing involved. Unless you want to flash to an unlocked bios to enable overclocking

Exciting stuff! I plan on buying a gold in a few months. It will be the last thing I buy to complete my gaming rig. The icing on the cake, so to speak :D

Hi guys, I'm looking at getting this card also. I now only have a gforce 2 mx on a P3 1ghz processor. Planning to upgrade that later, I play Nascar racing 2003 and currently get about 50 fps. How much difference could I expect with the 9700 still using my 1ghz processor?
Thanks,

Well firstly, what's wrong with 50fps? :)

Secondly, to answer your question the difference between a gf2 mx and a radeon 9700 gold w/1ghz cpu will be huge. I'd say you'd find it to be around 3-4 times faster. With a 2.5+ghz pentium 4, you'll get another 50-80% increase!! Cool huh?

I love my 9700 Pro. Best money I have spent on my computer in a long time. It was rough gong when I first got it last September, but now it is smooth sailing. :)

You do know that all the softmod does is basically change the ID of the card to a 9800 so that you can use the newer drivers that have some speed improvements that made it into the drivers for the 9800, but not the other ATI cards? The next version of Cats will have those speed improvements for all cards and should hopefully be out fairly soon. I'm not saying to forget aobut the softmod, but it isn't enabling anything extra on the card, it is just allowing you to use more optimized drivers.

that is totally untrue. the softmod (and also the new omega drivers, which i'm using right now) also enables speedvision 2.1 which has new features and better performance. it also enables softgart for a lot of people.

Thanks, well the 50 fps is while I'm sitting still and most of the eye candy turned off. Just trying to upgrade my pc one component at a time. Still torn between the 9500, 9700 and ti4600.
Many thanks,
David

if you are planning on upgrading the CPU sometime in the near future, i would get the 9700. its not that much more than the 9500 Pro and it offers much better FSAA performance.

I am inclined to agree with Edipis and say that the 9700 gold is the best buy for the future. Even without upgrading the CPU straight away the damn thing will still run every single game out today at maxed settings :D

However daveman, all 3 of those cards are extremely powerful. In fact, you're listing 3 of the top 4 cards available today! So, i'm sure you'll be happy with any of them.

Oh, one more reason to choose the Radeon 9500 PRO over the TI4600: it's slightly cheaper and is a DX9 card, plus it outperforms the TI4600 by a huge margin when AA and FSAA are turned on. IMO, anyone buying a TI4600 today is losing out.

Actually it is true. What do you think I meant by optimized drivers? We're talking about the same thing here.

If we are in fact talking about different things, what new features are in 2.1 anyways? I saw nothing new whatsoever. The control panel looked exactly the same, just with 2.1 at the top...

first of all you mean smoothvision, and from most reports 2.0 -> 2.1 hasn't really improved things as much as you'd think.

So that softmod won't void the warranty or anything? I'm going ot get either a 9700 or a 9700 Pro in the next few months depending on price. What exactly does the softmod do? I've heard about it but I haven't actually read much about it
