Personally I think it's more of an issue with the chipset implementation of AGP 8X, as the Xabre seems to have considerable issues running in AGP 8X mode in modern motherboards also
The subject: Our testing shows the Radeon 9700 will NOT work at all on the Asus P4S8X (SiS648), Gigabyte 7VAXP (KT400/8235), and VIA P4PB (P4X400/8235) which are the only 8x AGP boards on the market.
Seems to be a ATI problem but if a new BIOS fixes it great,also remember that the ATI 9700 is the first card to support 8X AGP spec so having problems with new 8X AGP boards and spec is not that surprising.
