Radeon 9700 pro lockup & instability problem

I have just bought & installed a Sapphire Radeon 9700 Atlantis Pro Ultimate Edition but am having problems with it locking when playing games based on the Quake III engine. Have tried installing latest catalyst drivers but this causes image tearing and random lockups. Can anyone shed some light on this problem.

My machine is a Duron 900 with a motherboard that supports AGP 2X/4X 2.0.

Does it only occur in Q3? My 9600 Pro will lockup if I attempt to run it in AGP 8x mode in any 3d app.
Also, the Radeon 9x00 line require some beefy power requirements, with the exception of the 9600s.
 
Thanks for your response. I tried installing Direct X first and then installing the driver for the video card and this seems to have resolved the problem. However, I am not sure whether this was what actually fixed the problem. Anyhow the board seems to work OK with all the games I have tried so far.
