Radeon 9700 PRO cooling. Crystal Orb and Copper RAMsinks or Zalman Heatpipe?

To cool my Radeon 9700 PRO, with very good case cooling (130cfm fan blowing pretty much directly on the card), what would work better?

This Zalman Heatpipe or a Crystal Orb and These RAMsinks? Or if there are any other good cooling methods that you would like to suggest, I am open to ideas. Thanks.

I've heard good things about the Zalman. Especially if you have a 130cfm fan near it. Should provide outstanding results. Why go with a silent solution though as I'm quite sure that intake fan makes plenty of noise to drown out the retail fan on the video card.

I can run my 9700 Pro at 371.3/702 with stock cooling, but I run it at default 99% of the time. To tell the truth, it's so fast I am unable to notice the difference between default and overclocked.

The Crystal Orbs work really well, but you MUST inspect the bottom of the heatsink first, and if need be, lap it. Thermaltake's Q/A of late has been pretty sloppy. The two CO's I bought recently had very rough bases with a slight concave to them that prevented proper contact with the VPU. Not only did it prevent proper contact, the concave channeled excessive pressure towards the circumference of the chip and not the center. This resulted in a crushed corner of the VPU and a very dead 9700 Pro. Thankfully, I was able to get it replaced.

By the way, Radio Shack carries some very good, heavy duty RAM heatsinks that work very well with the 9700 Pro and similiar cards. They're about a $1.50 each and you'll need to mount them using either thermal tape or adhesive.

Here's a pic of them on my 9700 Pro.

Thanks for the tip. What are those Radio Shack heatsinks made from?

My thoughts exactly. I could care less about noise at this point. I am simply looking for the number one cooling solution.

Yep. Those are the ones. They're very large, but they do fit on each memory module perfectly as you can see in the pic. Also, the aluminum used is of very high density so they absorb heat very well.

i would go with the heat pipe, they got there 9700 pro to 415 mhz with it.

I have a question: DOES the heat pipe cool memory and gpu or just gpu?

I recently bought the sinks from radio shack that I put on my 9500 pro at 9700 pro speed - 128 bit from memory bus. They are a little bit bigger than the actaul chips but who cares if they over hang a bit? That just means there is more metal to absorb heat with. just make sure u have thermal tape or some adhesive. I used tape, after a few minutes of running those sinks were welded to the chips =) gl with what ever you chose.

2Cool has a Crystal Orb with custom sinks for $28
There is also a how to at the site for installation.

Looks like a good deal. Ramsinks aren't the cool chrome color, but my 120mm fan is in the way of viewing anyways. I wonder if that Arctice Adhesive is Arctic Silver Adhesive or Arctic Alumina adhesive.

Actually I discovered that they had to to a vmod to get to that speed, so it wasn't just the cooler that did it.

The heatpipe is good if there's a fan on it. I got a 9cm fan low speed and it's warm to the touch. Without the fan it's burning hot dude. Also the heatpipe is only for GPU not the RAM b/c it does not touch the RAM chips at all.

This is what I have coming: Link to hsf
It was developed for Tyan's Tachyon G9700 Pro. I got it for my ATI 9700 Pro but am hoping that it will fit the new 9800 Pro that I plan on trading up for as soon as Circut city gets 'em in. Tuesday I think :D .

Hmmm...look's like it will have to be modded for the 9800. The 9800 has capacitors along the lower right edge (looking down from the top) of the card where the 9700 Pro does not. No biggie....I'll just bust those capacitors off. I mean if it was good enuff for Epox to recommend that to eliminate the 8KHA+/GF4 ti4600 combo problems then it should work here huh? lol... I still can't believe they suggested that.

Of course I am kidding about breaking them off the card ;)

Link doesn't work. And I am glad that you were only kidding about the capacitors. I was starting to freak out when you said that. :Q

If it doesn't touch RAM then I don't want it. Is there enough clearance under it to put RAMsinks on and still put the heatpipe on?
