Radeon 9700 DVI to HDMI?

I have a Radeon 9700 Pro and a Samsung LN-S2641D. I want to run a DVI to HDMI cable from my computer to my TV.

In the manual, it says, "HDMI/DVI IN terminal does not support PC.". I couldn't find anymore information in the manual or with light searching on Google. No reason is stated.

Am I stuck with S-Video to S-Video or is there a way I could get DVI to HDMI to work?
 
A dvi > hdmi cable will work. Does a 9700 support hdtv resolutions? It should I think.

The Samsung sets have different supported features for a vga input than for an hdmi input, which is what that comment refers to. Like on the vga input there is support for more pc resolutions, more frequency settings, compensates for overscan (like on the dlp sets). Whereas on the hdmi port it will only accept a standard 480i/p, 720p, or 1080i/p signal. In other words, you cannot set the pc to the native 1366x768 resolution through hdmi.
 
Along the same line of questioning, is it possible to use a DVI->HDMI adapter to achieve full 1080P resolution assuming your video card supports that exact resolution? Assuming it is, then the audio selection will have to come from a different source (because HDMI combines video and audio), so how do most TV's typically address that issue? Can you switch audio inputs w/ HDMI connection?

I had a GeForce 6200 hooked up to my Samsung hdtv, and the nvidia drivers automatically detected the hdtv and took me through a wizard to set up the card to output the hdtv resolution I wanted. I do not know what the ATI drivers do, but I assume it's similar.

Many tv sets have two-channel rca audio inputs next to the hdmi input that are used if no audio is passed through the hdmi cable. You'll usually see "dvi audio" listed in the tv's specs. Like they are there in this picture:
