Radeon 9600 vs Ti4200

I'm working on building a mid-range gaming system and the two cards I am looking at are either a Rosewill 9600 128mb card. Or a used ti4200/4400. Which would be a faster card for current games with current drivers? All the reviews of the 9600 that I can find are will ancient drivers.

Any other suggestions for the sub $80 price point?

I've used both fairly recently. I thought the IQ (image quality) was a little better with the 9600 pro. I didn't notice much difference in speed/FPS, but that coulda just been me (or the games I was playing).

If they are close in price, I'd go for the 9600 pro.

I don't think the newer drivers do much for the Ti4200 series. I prefered using the older ones (May 2002 I believe). The newer ones seemed to provide optimizations for the FX line.

I would guess that since the 9600 pro is a newer generation that the ti4200, driver support may be better/last longer.

The 9600XT should be noticeably faster than a Ti4200, although it will likely vary quite a bit from game to game and depending on the settings used (again, the 4200 is terrible at doing AA+AF, but pretty good comparitively without them turned on).

My answer to your question would be just a straight 9600 - you will get a warranty, plus you should able to overclock if fairly well if you can get some air moving over it. The memory bandwidth will also be at least as much as the 4200. Good luck buying your card!

note the rosewell 9600 he mentioned is a 9600 non pro. the 4200 will most likely be faster in most cases (mainly with no AF or high AA)
