They have 256 path but is is disabled. You need to flash the bios or use special drivers to enable the path.

Right, everything like the extra 4 pipelines, 256-bit data path, etc. are upgraded if you flash the bios. I personally use the Omega drivers as I've found them to be the best on my systems. I run the same clock speeds as the 9700 Pro, no extra fans/heatsinks, and my systems have been fine for over a year.

I also heard there are certain 9800SE models that can be flashed to 9800 Pro levels (been reading reviews on NewEgg) but I have no experience with them.

The 256-bit memory path is either there or it's not. It can't be enabled through anything software related. If it has L-shaped RAM, it has 256-bit memory all the time, even when it's just running as a 9500.

Now, the 4 extra pipelines can be enabled by software, but not simply a BIOS flash. You'll need to use Omega drivers to get the extra pipes without doing a hardware mod as well.

you are not guaranteed a 9700pro. I bought one last year and it wouldn't work. Had terrible artifacts with the mod enabled.

Wups your completely right. Mind blanked on that one.

EDIT: Nevermind, the OP had it in his post (was $117, now $117) 🙂.

They even state in the specs that it's L-shaped 🙂.

IMO, you're better off getting a used 9700 pro from the fs forum. It's probably a few bucks more, but you KNOW you'll get 9700 pro performance. The 9500 > 9700 mod isn't as good of a deal as it has been in the past.
