I need a relacement for my Radeon 9500 Pro. I was able to play Oblivion with this card so was happy enough. But its conked out yesterday. Which AGP card should I buy now to handle Oblivion a bit better and handle future games for a year or so? Price within $200 if possible.

But an AGP x850 is costing over $400.. I can afford a $200-$250 card. Wheres a good place to look for used cards?

You can get the X850XT PE at newegg for just over $300.00 - though it's stocked very rarely and you have to jump on it when you see it. I would not bother with AGP and move your stuff over to a PCIe mobo even if S754 that way you can get an X850XT PCIe for $160.00. The X850XT PE is just too expensive to buy for a non SM 3.0 compliant card anyway. Short of that i guess a 6800GS AGP would be ok if you just have to have AGP.

I'd say go with the 6800gs. The x850pro is really not particularly fast, especially for a card over $200. At that price, you would want to step up to a 7800gs, which is $280 (today) at Newegg:

Actually, I'm not even seeing the 6800gs agp right now - is it in stock anywhere?

Sad to say, but AGP is just about dead - there are very few cards made for it anymore. You might want to go with something used.

what settings?

AA turned off, Bloom on, no HDR, Rendering distant everything, 800x600. Athlon 2800+, 1.5 Gig RAM. Played and looked pretty good, especially when riding through the landscapes on horseback. But major slowdown everytime goblins threw fire on me in cave dungeons! It played Halflife2, FarCry and Fear fine as well, all on 800x600 (Fear slower than the other two). Wish I could fix this card..

Well, actually I found this x800 for $139, which is slightly faster than a 6600gt, here
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814123159

Then, there's this 6800 for $154 AMR, which is also slightly faster than a 6600gt

Thanks. What is the difference between Radeon X800XL and non-XL X800? There's a $50 price difference between the two.

The x800xl has 16 pixel pipes, the x800 has 12. If you can find a AGP x800xl for ~$200, I'd take it, since it would let you run some higher settings, and last longer in future games.

This really depends on the rest of your system's specs, but if you were still doing ok with a 9500 Pro, this card will rock your world and not break the bank.

It's bad news, but the simple fact is that AGP cards are now way more expensive than equivalent PCI-E cards.

That looks like a good price for me, thanks!

I'd go with that too.

That, or a 6800GS, which also might be in your price range.

Just be sure to Overclock em ;)

Just keep in mind that the X800/X850 line of ATI cards does not support PS 3.0, so you won't be able to to turn on HDR in Oblivion (if thats important to you, not worth it IMO).

Basically the 7800 GS would be the only card allowing you to do that for the moment with a good experience. OR you could go with a 6800GS

I just upgraded from my ATI Radeon 9500 Pro as of yesterday.

I got a PNY 6800GS AGP. I was able to unlock the disabled pipes using RivaTuner, and I scored a 10894 on 3DMark 2003 with a P4 2.4GHz running stock speeds for both video card and CPU.

I also got the Arctic Cooler Silencer NV5 Rev. 3, and it installed nice and easy. Very satisfied. Got the 6800GS for $186 shipped.

Can you tell what was the performance boost?

I'm thinking of upgrading my card as well. With every game I have more and more problems.

I currently have an ati AIW9800 pro. My processor is a Intel P4, 2.54GHZ, 1 gig of ram.

Is a GeForce 7800 GS overkill for this machine?

Is the processor a limiting factor here - or can I get another 9 months to a year out of this?

Thanks for any advice.
