radeon 9500 PRO/AGP

If my motherboard only supports up to 4x AGP can i still put in a 8x AGP and it will only run at 4x? or will it just not run?

it runs at 4x and the performance difference is almost nonexsistant so its not a problem. may not work with certain motherboards though, i dont know which ones.
