Hello, I have a problem with my new Sapphire Radeon 9500 64 Mb I received today. I'm pretty sure the problem started when I tried to tweak the clock speeds of the card.

The problem is, when I start any game that needs 3D, the screen will go black and it essentially locks up. I have to hard power off the PC because CTRL+ALT+DEL does not work at that point.

When it comes back up, the error report is saying the problem is in my card, the detail says the device is stuck in an infinite loop.

When I first got the card, I ran it without problems, I did a benchmark in UT2003 and ran 3DMark 2001 SE without a hitch.. Played another game that uses 3D without a hitch, then I got bold enough to want to overclock it to see if I could get any more performance out of it. I came from a Gainward GeForce 3 Ti200 128 Mb which I never had a problem, it was even clocked to 240/500 (up from its own default of 200/450).

So I downloaded a tweaker (I don't remember the name) but after running it's setup, I realized it was only for ATI Rages. So I removed it and downloaded radeontweaker and radtweak, I unzipped and ran radtweak those but did not mess with any settings and deleted that. Finally I downloaded Rage3d Tweak and installed that. Followed the instructions and tried to set my clock speed to 301.5 and memory to 301.5. After setting that up. I tried to run UT2003 benchmark and it crashed with the above problem. I tried my other game and same problem. I reset the speeds back to default and I still had the problem. So I removed the tweak program and had the problem, reinstalled the driver and had the problem. So I ran reg edit and removed any occurance of Rage3D Tweak out of my registry. Removed the card from my computer and put it back in.

That seemed to have worked since I could run UT2003 and other games. I thought all was well until I tried to ALT+TAB out of the game and the problem came back. I repeated the process and it didn't work this time. So I removed the driver, and searched my registry for any occurance of: "Radeon" and "Tweak" and removed any occurance of those (except NVTweak). Removed the card and reinstalled it. But to my chagrin, the problem was still there. I have now put back in my GeForce 3 and everything is working fine again. If you are interested in my benchmarks I have done when the card worked. They are below along with my computer configuration.

Gainward GeForce 3 Ti200 128 Mb
core/memory
175/400: Flyby, 48.99 Botmatch, 34.58 6475 3D marks
200/450: Flyby, 55,96 Botmatch, 38.54 6721 3D marks
210/480: Flyby, 58.96 Botmatch, 39.90 6991 3D marks
240/500: Flyby, 65.61 Botmatch, 42.73 7354 3D marks

Sapphire Ati Radeon 9500 64 Mb
276/270 : Flyby, 97.36 Botmatch, 41.85 9026 3D marks

Athlon XP 1800+
1 Gb PC2100 DDR Samsung
Shuttle AK35GTR
Windows XP Professional w/ SP1

Using Catalyst Drivers 3.2
Using Detonator 43.45

EDIT: I forgot to add that I did uninstall the nVidia drivers on the last try.

Here is the crashdata from XP

I recieved my GeForce FX 5200 today and got the 5200 installed. turned out not to be an Ultra. Ah wells. here are the benchmarks:

core/memory

Gainward GeForce 3 Ti200 128 Mb
175/400: Flyby, 48.99 Botmatch, 34.58 6475 3D marks
200/450: Flyby, 55.96 Botmatch, 38.54 6721 3D marks
210/480: Flyby, 58.96 Botmatch, 39.90 6991 3D marks
240/500: Flyby, 65.61 Botmatch, 42.73 7354 3D marks

Sapphire Ati Radeon 9500 64 Mb
276/270: Flyby, 97.36 Botmatch, 41.85 9026 3D marks

PixelView GeForce FX 5200 128 Mb
250/500: Flyby, 82.06 Botmatch, 45.03 6985 3D marks

As to why the GeForce FX lost to a GeForce 3 I have no idea on why in 3DMark2001. Little disappointed in that. But the Botmatch scores are higher. Which leads me to believe the GeForce FX takes more load off the CPU than the Radeon and the GeForce 3. Lower score in Flyby than Radeon maybe due to the GeForce FX's weakness in DX8.

Back to the computer problem. I tested the Radeon 9500 in another computer.
1.2 Ghz Athlon
256 Mb PC133 SDRAM
not sure what motherboard.
Windows 98

And the first time I ran it in 3DMark locked up halfway through. I attributed this to a not as stable OS that hasn't been reinstalled in a long time (computer runs like crap anyway even though it's a 1.2 Ghz my K62-450 boots faster)

my second run through the 3DMark did something funky. I didn't watch it all the way, but when I got back to the computer it seemed to have locked up.. Well not locked up but didn't get back to windows I am not sure how far it got in the tests I stayed for the first half of them.

Did you plug in the extra molex thingy to your card? If you did, you might need a better powersupply to power that mofo.

Yes, I used the molex (is that what it is called? :) ) I am using a 350w power supply, and the other computer is a 450w. I don't think it is a power issue I hope :)
