Radeon 9200se or 9550??

I dont know which Radeon to get,

-9200se 64-bit 128mb DDR 200/400
or
-9550 64-bit 128mb DDR 250/400

both are made by Sapphire and both are $50, I dont know much about these GPUs, but I'm sure the 9550 is faster than the 9200se esp at $50, but what is the catch? Is the 9550 not good and is that why its priced the same as the 9200se? help help 😕

Both are awful cards for gaming. If you're going to be putting these in a websurfing box, or a really light gaming machine, then spring for the 9550.

Oh yah, duh, I forgot to mention that... This system is NOT for gaming (only occasional light gaming, definitely nothing like Doom3 or Far Cry), I just need a vid card since the mobo I'm getting (nForce 250Gb) does not come with integrated graphics.

Why don't you get a used Radeon 9700 Pro. I just sold my AiW Radeon 9700 Pro for $120 Canadian ($92 U.S.). It's way faster and when you want to play a game you won't be disappointed like you would be with the cruddy 9200SE or the 9550.🙂

Because it's TWICE AS MUCH? Maybe? Or because noisy fans aren't welcome everywhere?

They're both "slowest" incarnations of their range, with low frequencies, and 64-bit memory. The 9550 is the faster chip overall, and is DX9 capable, so I'd say go with that. Mind the features - even cards in that price range should have DVI and VGA connectors, and some even have an SVideo TV-out rather than Composite.

Cool, thanks for the info guys.. I've decided to get the 9550 since it does have the VGA, DVI connectors and TV-Out and the 9200 only has VGA

actually, I may have to rethink this $50 card is crackin my friend's budget... Basically I need a vid card equivalent to integrated onboard GeForce4 MX graphics since the mobo im getting does not have integrated gfx

One of the GF4 MX iterations then.

Cheapest gf4mx is still $39 on pricewatch, there really isn't much room to save on a videocard under $50.

I do have an old *32mb* rage128 I'd part with for $10 if you like. 😉

There's a GF4MX400 on Newegg for $35... that's about the oldest card I'd recommend. You get much older than that and you start running into driver and compatibility problems with some cards, and you're not going to run ANYTHING remotely modern in terms of 3D.

For 2D-only work, though, something like a Rage128 would probably be OK.
