how much are you planning to spend on a psu? you can get a ti4200 or 4400 in fs/ft for 60-75 dollars

Nothing is going to stop you from using two monitors with a 9550 or even a 9200. ATi's cards are rather good at that too - as long as you don't forget to install the Hydravision software.

In fact, I'm sat in front of twin 20" CAD monitors, driven by an ECS 9200SE card. No problem there. My mate's office machine runs the same twin-big-monitors setup just as well, with the PowerColor 7500LE card I had before the 9200. (We went for the fanless LE/SE cards because we don't care about 3D performance, and want our cards to be absolutely quiet.)

Here's a 9600SE

Nah one video card is just fine, as long as it has a DVI and a VGA 15 pin connector, all you do is attach the VGA to DVI connector and pug it in the DVI slot and your ready to go.. Although is you have that much money dont waste it on a 5500 or 9550, just get a Geforce 4 Ti 4200 somewhere, itll probably easiily beat those cards.

Why both of those cards are horrible. My ANCIENT Radeon 8500 is even faster than both of them. I get about 11500 stock in 3dmark 01 iwth a similar setup. Now looking at 9550s setup, 250/400 stock speeds are just plain weak for 2004!!!! ....even for a budget card. Definately go for Geforce 4 4200.

Here is one for $81

You can find other brand name cards for <$90 on pricewatch.com

Radeon 9550
250 MHz
1000 MTexels/s
128-bits
DDR
200 MHz
6.40 GB/s

GeForce4 Ti4200 128 MB
250 MHz
2000 MTexels/s
128-bits
DDR
222 MHz
7.10 GB/s

Around the same price 4200 is faster no contest, + it will offer better performance in doom 3

A Ti4200 is definately faster, but out of a 9200 and a 9550, definately go with the 9550. It's a down-clocked 9600, basically. I have a 9200 non-SE, and while it works (and works well, for multi-mon), the 3D is mediocre.

No you don't. All Radeon chips except the original 7200 have dual output pipes, and can drive two CRTs, or one CRT plus a DVI panel, or CRT+TV, DVI+TV, or even CRT+DVI+TV.
Quite obviously, the card must actually offer two VGA connectors or one VGA and one DVI. This DVI port can then be adapted back to VGA, the required adapter mostly being included with the card if you buy a "retail box" version.
