I just bought an xp1700 and a radeon 9100 to put in my kt7a w/512mb ram for a quick and cheap bedroom computer

Quiet is paramount to this project
so far the CPU has reached 1885 and the vidcard is at 300core 275mem

those speeds may come down once i get it in a case and quieted down (use Zalman cnps6000 copper set to quiet)

The radeon 9100 has a very loud fan on it (in relation to the reset of the system)
I would like to replace this with an old passive heatsink from a p3
I will need to do some trimming of the heatsink and some bending of the fins maybe but thats okay i'm not worried about all the pci slots this will take up

so... my question is will this be adaquate cooling? (case is well ventilated although all fans are set to 5v or 7v)

I have a similar but slightly smaller HS on my MSI GF4 MX440. It is fine under full load as long as my case remains under 35c. I have heard the GF4s have traditionally run a bit warmer than radeons. I imagine you will be fine, but you may need some sort of fan blowing over it if you don't have at least a bit of air in that direction in your case.

Awesome thanks brian, I kinda thought it would be okay but i thinks its always better to ask first just in case someone says "I tried this already and it was never stable again!"

since using artic silver epoxy is pretty damn permanent

just reached over and unplugged that damn fan, now I can't even hear it over my roomates stereo and my door is closed 🙂

I did this to my TI200, used an old Pentium hs. Even when my case exceeds 38 Cs, I can still play games fine. No ocing though.
