Radeon 9000 PCI vs. other low-profile cards

I'm currently debating whether or not to purchase an ATI Radeon 9000 PCI video card. The reason I am looking at this model specifically is because it will fit into a low-profile case. I'm currently running a GeForce4 MX440 AGP card, and the motherboard is nForce2 with GeForce2 chipset onboard... Obviously the nForce2 GF2 isn't so great, and the GF4 I have isn't even as nice as the Radeon DDR VIVO 64m card in my other computer. Much lower FPS.

Anyway, Has anyone else used the Radeon 9000 64M PCI cards, and are they better than what I have already used? I don't want to go out and buy one only to find out it isn't much better. I also haven't found many articles with comparisons of the 9000 PCI vs other similar cards.

here's an example of what I am getting for FPS in UT2k3.
GeForce4 MX440 & AMD XP1700+ w/ 512mb ram - 1024x768 ~20 - 30FPS @ 16bit color / ~15FPS @ 32bit color
Radeon DDR VIVO 64M & AMD XP2200+ w/ 1gb ram - 1024x768 ~40 - 50FPS @ 32bit color

Anybody have any suggestions on what course of action I should take?

For starters, the nForce2 isn't gF2MX level, it's gF4MX. Run dual-channel memory and you'll see about a 25-30% increase in the performance of the IGP.

Secondly, the R9000 PCI is a pointless buy with the R9100 available. Low-profile is available if you look around. And of course, why use PCI when you can use AGP? There's plenty of low-profile AGP cards available.

sorry, I was wrong in saying the motherboard was nForce2. Apparently it is not. It does have a GeForce2 video chipset on it though.

If you know of some good low-profile AGP video cards, feel free to inform me of what models are low-profile. I have only seen a few PCI models from ATI that are low-profile. All of the ATI AGP cards I've looked at are not low-profile. Many of the GeForce4 MX cards are low-profile AGP. Other than that I don't know of any other cards that are low-profile. It doesn't seem to me like there is an abundance of low-profile agp cards that can produce decent quality gaming FPS.

I went to googlegear.com and search for low profile and came up with 2 interesting hit. One for gigabit internet card which cost 129 bucks and another one is a PNY quadro4 for 282.

I wonder how they work though.

Powercolor made a low-profile Radeon 8500LE, IIRC. Also passive-cooled to boot.

Haven't seen any faster consumer-level cards lately, but then again I haven't really been looking. :p

I agree that the 9100 would be a better choice FOR GAMING than the 9000.... but the 9000 can run without a fan, same for some MX4-440's. In a small system, you might appreciate the silent, cool running 9000.

And the gaming difference between 9000 non-pro vs. 8500LE/9100 isn't a huge margin.... ~20% slower depending on RAM speeds.

The MX440 was running pretty hot, so I stuck a 40mm fan on it and it helps a lot. I'm not too worried about having to use a fan, I don't mind a little noise.
