I have built a new system consisting of:
Abit KR7A 133 Raid
AMD XP2100
ATI 8500DV
Soundblaster Audigy Platinum
etc.
I am trying to use Win98 and have only installed the basics, only the video card, and every time I load the ATI drivers or third party drivers, it crashes. I have searched this site and Rage3d for other threads and have found that Win 98 is not "officialy" supported, but many have gotten it to work with the Win ME drivers. I have done the following things:
(1.) Load OS, ATI drivers, CRASH!!
(2.) Load OS, raid drivers, ATI drivers, CRASH!!
(3.) Load OS, raid drivers, 4-in-1 drivers, ATI drivers, CRASH!!
(4.) Load OS, raid drivers, 4-in-1 drivers, DirectX 8.1, ATI drivers, CRASH!!
(5.) Load OS, raid drivers, 4-in-1 drivers, DirectX 8.1, Win 9x/ME OMEGA DRIVERS 2.4.44 drivers, CRASH!!
(6.) Load OS, raid drivers, 4-in-1 drivers, DirectX 8.1, Win 9x_020704 drivers (might be the same as the OMEGA drivers, but thought I would try them anyway), CRASH!!
It is always O.K. until the video drivers, then CRASH, and when I say CRASH, I mean locked completely, nothing works, not even Ctrl, Alt, Delete, I have to force it off, and on restart, it will lock before it gets to the desktop. I can start in safe mode and go to control panel to try and remove the video drivers, but when I try, I get an error. I have even tried to repair and reload the OS but even that won't work, so the only thing I have been able to do is re-format and reload the OS and start over new.
I am dual booting with Win2000 and it works (at least it doesn't crash, it has other issues, but I haven't worked with it yet). I have built 3 other computers in the past month for friends, and have used the ATI 8500 LE version with the supplied drivers, with Win98, and have had no problems at all. But this one is driving me CRAZEY!!! I have never had video drivers lock a computer like this. Any ideas?? PLEASE HELP!!!!
