Radeon 8500 vs. GeForce 3 TI (yeah..another one :)

i just thought this is odd:

On THG...there is this review where they compared a bunch of GF3 TI cards..and in the bencmark results there is this one 3dmark2001 test..which at the end is dominated by the Radeon 8500.

You can read:

"Since the latest driver release, the RADEON 8500 has dominated this test. It's only a matter of time before NVIDIA wins back the 3DMark crown, with a newer, even more "optimized" driver for the GF3, though. The GF2 Ti, meanwhile, lags behind its competitor, the R7500. In this case, the reason is not a more optimized driver - the RADEON's main advantage lies in its faster memory.
"

I think this is utter nonsense...and/or biased thinking.

(*) nothing speaks against that ATI instead will come up with new drivers soon which give the 8500 a boost.....that this MAY happen seems to be totally out of the question - since for some people improvements/new drivers seem only to happen for 'their' hardware..but NOT for the other :)

(*) It's still highly unlikely that the gf3 will beat the 8500 in 3dmark2001 - respective there is a lot of truth MISSING in this benchmarks which are needed to understand what really is going on..and to be able to do a 'judgement'.... (if that's possible at all)

The truth is that 3dmark2001 uses dx8.1 features and pixelshader1.4....and (as far as i KNOW..CMIIAW :) the geforce cards dont even RUN those 3dmark2001 tests because they dont have those features in h/w. So...even if there would be a *magic* driver out for the Geforce it would NOT enable hardware pixelshader1.4 support and other features the radeon HAS

To make it even more funny...you then could say: "The geforce beats the Radeon by a few hundred points"...but of course do NOT mention the fact that the Geforce wasnt even *able* to execute half of the tests/benchmarks because of its limitations.

But...it's ALL so easy to limit a test/comparison to a few (more or less) meaningless points....

It seems to me that no matter what benchmark I've seen used, someone always says it is biased. Isn't the point of benchmarks to "benchmark" so they should be as fair as possible?

My goodness... you people dont really believe 3dmark2k1 was written in dx8.1 with ps1.4 do you? Man I hope not.. go freakin check your facts before you post.

<< Wow flexy.. that is the most ignorant post I have read in a good while. >>

tjhis are big words :)

i'd rather prefer you giving me an example/proof why my posting might be ignorant. Not that i exclude myself from posting ignorant...i just want to know :)

Anyway....I think it's odd/strange (should i say DUMB ?) to read on THG a statement like 'it's to expect that teh Geforce will BEAT the radeon in 3dmark2k1 because of new driver releases soon" <---- sorry...this is not only IGNORANT....but that's guessing ans wishful thinking and has NOTHING to do with a (preferrable) un-biased hardware review...resp. comparison of graphicscards :)

Where is this information from ? From Ms. Cleo ?

besides the fact that driver updates btw ALSO happen for the ATI radeon

This few sentences just showed me the psychology behind the article writer - first an EXCUSE why radeon is faster in 3dmark2001.....and THEN a GUESS that this results may change anyway because of 'new drivers soon'.

I excpect unbiased statements, sorry....and i think i can set higher standards for sites like anandtech and THG...

3dmark 2001 is built upon direct x 8.0 not 8.1 . Yes Nvidia does have another driver in the works and yes ATI is trying to fix theirs. Yes Nvidia can top ATI in 3dmark2001 with driver optimizations because direct x 8.0 does NOT use ps1.4. *sigh*

I doubt Nvidia will top ATI in 3dmark2k1, but I do believe the gap between the ti500 and the 8500 in real world apps will widen.

Sorry to get my feathers ruffled. Im a fan of both cards.. but I really dont like someone bashing a reviewer because they disagree with comments that may not elevate their card up. Tom does know about the upcoming driver. So do others. What it can and can't do.. that remains to be seen.
