I'm undecided between the two cards and I'll buy it in about an hour. I've not made my choice on the manufacturer of the Ti 200 card yet. I'll buy it today and put it in my current rig. I originally planned to buyy a Ti 4200 for my new computer (I'll buy it in about 9 days) but it won't be out then and my current TNT2 Ultra won't work in my new comp (3.3v AGP vs 1.5...). So what do you guys suggest?

I too can't suggest anything but the ti4200. Do you really need it that fast?

Edit: Don't use your computer or get some old card.

Well as I said, I'm building my new system next week so I'll just go out and buy some stuff today (case, PSU, probably vid card) and I'll wait for the RAM, Mobo and CPU because I don't have all the money right now. So I don't need it for today but it would be a good step forward to have it today....

tom's hardware video card comparison

according to tom's hardware, the Radeon will outperform a ti200 by a slim margin. i believe people say ATi has a bit better 2D image quality too. but since you say you're only going to use this card for 9 days, I'd go with whichever one is cheaper, as they are both fine cards.

I won't use it for nine days, I'll use it with my P4 system that I'll build in nine days so I want a product that will be decent. I don't need the fastest vid card on Earth, just one that can play all my games at a decent FPS and get good IQ. I'm not a big fan of First person shooters so I don't care about 160 vs 150 fps, but AA is somewhat important.

radeon 8500 all the way with the latest drivers it is at the same level or higher as the TI500 check out the hardocp review

IMO the 128 MB LE is your best bet

IMO, the Radeon 8500 is going to give you a much better image quality, and in most cases with updated drivers, out perform the GeForce 3 ti500. It's AA does not blur images near as much as the GeForce3's AA.

If it meant waiting a mear 9 days for the 4200, I would definately wait. You went this far without an upgrade, waiting a week won't kill you.

I finally set my mind on a Gainward GeForce3 from FS/FT forum. If it doesn't work out, I'll buy a Radeon for sure (I prefer used since it cheaper, but I might just go out and pay full price for it...)

With newer drivers the Radeon 8500 should beat the Ti200 in pretty much every situation. Of course nVidia still has better image quality in 3D mode and better drivers overall.

Take your pick.

Personally, given the choice between only those two cards I'd still get the Ti200 because I want the ability to do trilinear + anisotropic filtering at once.

Radeon 8500! I've seen my friends gf3 ti200 and I can tell you that the 2d/3d quality of the radeon 8500 is better than the ti200...imo ;).

On most posts you seem to say this BFG10K, just wondering where you base this assumption on.

Anyway, Radeon 8500 is to compared to the GeForce 3ti500 not the ti200. It has superior 2D (i think it does, it kicked the arse of my old GF2-MX400 and the 2D doesn't seem to have improved with the later versions of geforce i'm told) hence superior 3D when outputted to monitor. But, Bah, wait for the GF4-ti4200.. both of these cards are starting to get dated.

My 8500 is running all my games at 1600x1200 with all settings on max. Very smoooth and looks as good as my old Matrox.

R8500. Its got better 2D than the GF3, and is faster than the GF3 Ti 200 but slower than a Ti 500. Although, I would not spend money on either of these (or on a GF4 Ti 4200 for that matter) if you don't game. I'd go pickup a Matrox G400 or G550 which rest assured are 1.5v AGP cards.

Radeon 8500 Retail or GeForce3 Ti200? That's a no-brainer. Radeon 8500 stomps all over it, not just in IQ, but performance. Even the Ti500 is ousted by the Radeon 8500. You get superb DVD playback, incredible IQ, and all-out performance. ATi's latest driver sets are phenomenal (at least, in comparison to a few months ago). Did I mention BB has cleared them out for as little as $59 each (open box, of course, although I've heard of sealed retail's at 76.50 as well). Don't bother with the 128MB card. It's too much for too little, IMHO.

That said, you may be better off going with a cheap PCI card for now (as others have suggested) and waiting on the next generation, which will arrive sooner than most people realize. GF5 / R300 / Parhelia(?) are on the horizon and are likely to annihiliate anything today, perhaps significantly. Just my thoughts, YMMV. :D
