I just built a new W2k machine with an Asus p4b266 and Radeon 8500. All the chipset drivers appear to be loaded and the Radeon drivers are loaded. I am not at the machine so I am not sure what Version the ATI drivers are. The problem is when you boot everything is OK until you click on an icon or start a program. Then the monitor turns into garbage. If you reboot, the problem is stiil there. If you shut down/power off, the video is normal untill you start a program. I am going to try a PCI video card tonight to rule out chipset problems. Any ideas?? RR

doesn't sound like a video card problem at all, if you can see windows fine, then opening a normal program won't make a difference to the video card. If it was a game, then I could see a problem.

Thanks for the input. I went to the site rage3d.com and searched the posts for info. They said I must have Direct X 8.1 and W2K service pack 2 installed. Also try to disable AGP fast writes, change the AGP apperature size, disable video cashe in the BIOS. Hopefully something will work. RR

I pulled the Radeon and put in an old PCI video card--the machine works fine. I think the card is bad. When you start the computer first the screen if fine, then is't crazy with red-blue-green lines and the mouse appears as a box. I had another card die several years ago, and it did almost the same thing. Any other ideas?? The Radeon could be fine and something is screwed with the AGP buss. Ideas??

RMA it.

Its DEAD.
I have a Radeon 8500, I tried Replacing certain resistors and Capacitors,
ended up frying it.
mine does the same thing whenever I start a newer OpenGL game, or any Direct 3D Game.

It's not overclocked. I got it a Best B for $140 with rebates, they probably won't have any to exchange it with for weeks!! R
