Go with the 8500. Has one more pipeline and the clocks are higher... well I'm not quite sure about the clock thingy but I KNOW the pipe thingy is correct. BTW this belongs in the Video forum.

Sapphire is the best of the "Powered by ATI" brands (they are actually contracted to build many of the "built by ATI" cards too)

How does the 8500 compare to the old Geforce-3? I am considering options too.

i think they're about comparable. i couldnt get a geforce 3 on newegg, so i decided not to bother.

the 8500 i got was in place of a MX440 which was what i was originally intending to get...

I've run a Hercules 8500le and a PNY GF3-ti200 and the gf3 i think was a bit better, but also more expensive. Thus, i'd stay w/ my 8500le.

If you can pull it off, you'll still be doing good. Uh, that doesn't include an OS does it? Which one you gonna use?

Join the club, though. I estimated my shed would be about $750.00. At last tally, it was closer to $1,500.00! :Q

The price of that damn OS has me pointing people to Dell. I can't come close to slapping a cheap system togther for what they do. At least you'll have a decent video card in there. Can students get a discount on XP?

BTW, this puppy was mostly screwed together. Any nails were driven by hand, and yeah, I let it get a little out of hand.
