I'm having very big problems running some of my OpenGL based programs with Radeon8500!
ATI doesn't seem to give a f... about improving OGL support for this card and I was thinking...
Is it possible to run Radeon with a drivers from some other card manufacturer who makes cards
based on the same ATI's GPU?
If yes, does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!

I have no problems with OpenGL games on my rig.

What are your rig spec's? What games?

It's actually an animation package. "Houdini" from SideFX.
It is mentioned in apps docs that Houdini needs a very good OGL support and I didn't expect
this card to perform as good as professional graphic accelerator but hey, the way it works right now...!
Works, is just not the right word. It doesn't work! A simple attempt to view any shader hangs the computer.
Not to mention constant disappearing whole parts of app's UI.
Now, the very same application works just fine with virtually any GeForse card.

ATI's FireGL line of cards is certified for use with Houdini, not the 8500. ATI probably figures if you have $18000 for a seat of Houdini, you can afford a workstation card;)

Actually, the catalyst driver team did a great job on the OpenGL driver IMHO.

Actually, "Houdini Select" costs 1299.00 and "Houdini Apprentice" is free of charge because it's a trial version.
so, I cannot afford buying FireGL (a technology which ATI didn't even develop but aquired from somebody else,
no wander their OGL support suck so much!) If I could, I'd rather buy Wildcat VP.
As for Catalist, -didn't change a damn thing!

Yea whatever, I'm familiar with Houdini's product family.

Because it's a gaming card, OpenGL "gaming" is working fine. Why not pick up a GF2+ card? They are certified for Houdini, you can pick one up for <$50. They'll run your "Houdini Apprentice" ;) just fine.

you tried omega's drivers?
they're the best drivers I've ever used for my radeon. they are, however, optimized for games, so it's possible he wouldn't have considered houdini?
anyways, it's an easy install so it can't really hurt to try.
