I'm thinking about getting this video card.

Anyone have any problems using it?

Some stuff of mine:
Epox 8K7A
TBird 1.2ghz @ 1.2ghz
SB Live! Platinum 5.1
Win XP Pro

...or is the price difference between the radeon 8500 and geforce ti 4200 minimal enough to justify the geforce?

I guess what I'm asking is...

are radeon8500 drivers for winXP = major sux0rs? and, is 8500 image quality (2d and 3d) really better than the ti4200???

(if you guys got stuff to say about it...umm...can you post system specs so that I don't look like a moron asking for 'em all the time :D)

Thanks!

Well, I had a 8500 for a while...i had to constantly mess with it to get games to stop crashing/freezing. Maybe it was just me, but alot of people had the same trouble. I'd opt for the GeForce 4 it will give you less trouble and better framerates too.

When the card was released in 11/01, the drivers (Win9x,Win2k & WinXP) were few and far between and not up to the task. Things have since turned around and ATi has done a splendid job with their driver support team. New drivers are now coming on a very frequent basis and the current crop are excellent, rock steady and really showcase the strength of the Radeon 8500. I up-graded from a GeForce 3 to a Radeon 8500 and it has been a very pleasant surprise. You get about 85% of GF4 performance at less than 50% of the cost of a GF4. I highly recommend the Radeon 8500.

BTW, I've seen used Radeon 8500's go for as little a $100 in the FS/FT forum.

Just make sure you get the "Built by ATI" Radeon 8500s, I generally find that those are of higher quality and have far less issues than ones made by third party OEMs. They also cost slightly more.

Interesting...

What exactly do they do that's so different?

And....radeon 8500 or 8500LE???

huge performance gap?

Not so much as a performance gap... the difference is in WHO makes them (ATI, hercules, gigabyte, random generic factories... etc).

Heres an example:

I bought a Hercules Radeon 8500LE, it performs on par with the ATI build Radeon 8500LE, but i cannot use the latest ATI drivers because the Hercules Radeon has a BIOS issue that prevents it from doing so. That is just 1 minor quirk. But other cards *may or may not* include stuff like lower 2d visual quality (same thing nvidia's been suffering from 3rd party makers) or maybe just poor design (cant confirm that). FYI, Hercules Radeon 8500 has excellent 2d quality.

If you buy a "Built by ATI" Radeon 8500, you're garunteed a card that is stable, can be updated with the latest ATI drivers, awesome 2d quality, something not garunteed by "Powered by ATI" cards. but also note that "Powered by ATI" is cheaper than "Built by ATI"

As for Radeon 8500 and Radeon 8500LE, the LE runs at lower core/memory clock. 230/230 compared to 275/275 I believe. this generally results in lower performance, but not a HUGE gap. My Hercules Radeon 8500LE overclocks to 275 core / 250 memory.

What is the 2d on the powercolor radeon 8500LE like?

I currently have a powercolor GF2 MX which has lame 2d (blurry over 1024-768 at 75hz), but I'm tempted to get their radeon since it's so cheap!

In the vast majority of cases ATi themselves manufactures them. There are presently only two third party manufacturers actually making R8500 boards, those being Gigabyte and Club3D... with hercules expected to start within the next couple of months.
Hence, 2D visual quality and quality of manufacture should be identical between ATi's own boards and those of the vast majority of third parties.
Currently ATi is manufacturing the boards per the tghird party companies requirements and reselling them to said third party for branding and resale.

The BIOS issue preventing you from intsalling ATi's drivers can be gotten around by manually installing said drivers instead of going through ATi's driver installation setup. FWIW, Hercules has stated they intend to issue a BIOS update to resolve this however.

With the noteable exception of Club3D I would not at all be worried about purchasing a third party ATi Radeon 8500 board, this is in marked contrast to the situation with the R7500 boards in which many manufacturers are using extremely lowly clocked DRAM, and in some cases even using SDR SDRAM.

FWIW, the 8500LE is clocked at 250/250, instead of the 275/275 of ATi's Retail boards.
Club3D is retailing a select series of their R8500 boards clocked at 230/230 however, as is another third party whom I cannot recall at the moment. The 230/230 R8500's are typically referred to as the R8500LELE.

The drivers still arent quite as good as nVidia's but I would say they are reasonably good at this point in time and I wouldnt expect you to have any issues at all. Most driver problems have long since been resolved.

The image quality issue is debateable, personally I don't consider ATi to have significantly better 3D image quality then nVidia. In fact, I'd say that image quality between nVidia and ATi can vary depending upon the individual game/application in question.
I would certainly agree that ATi offers superior 2D image quality then even the best of nVidia board manufacturers... but whether this is beneficial to you I've no way of saying. 2D image quality can vary dramatically depending upon the chosen reslution and monitor in use... and individual eyesight.
Some people are unable to see any difference between even the worst of nVidia boards, while others can see a clear and distinct difference between even the best of nVidia boards and ATi.
2D is as much influences by individual eyesight and other factors as the graphics card in use.

My Hercules Radeon 8500LE came default clocked at 250 core / 238 memory and I have NOT gotten around to installing the newest ATI drivers by simply bypassing the ATI install program.

2D quality is debatable, but if you have anything BUT a large, high quality monitor, i doubt you will notice the difference.

i have the same setup you have EXCEPT for the SBlive 5.1 plat :)

I got a 8500 a while ago to replace my kyro 2, and it has been absolutely wonderful. No bad things to say about it :D

However, if you're upgrading from a geforce 3 ti200, there's a marginal difference and i would recommend saving the few bux for something a lot better once it rolls around.

hope that helps :)

I have a geforce2 ultra i'm putting in another system.

I'm sure it won't be a HUGE performance difference, but I just want something < $200 that'll be good.

so far the best bang for the buck is the 64MB 8500...unless someone can point me another way??????

I also use an LCD (viewsonic vg151), so dvi is a must for video cards...

You might try poking at the GeForce 4 ti4200s... They are less than $200, and one of the best is Leadtek and Gainward.

I have an ati radeon 8500 64mb le still clocked at 250/250...I'm running the 6043 drivers and I haven't had a problem with the card yet...I love it to death and I highly recommend it to anyone who's on a budget and still wants powerful performance...

There's no denying that the Radeon 8500 offers a superb bang for buck and from what I hear the newest drivers are pretty good indeed.

I have the Retail (made by ATI) Radeon 8500 64mb that came clocked at 275/275 and it has been outstanding for me. I upgraded from a Geforce 2 MX and the diffrence is significant. Especially in Counter Strike (which comes free with the retail Radeon 8500!) the Radeon really impresses. In fact the only problems I have had are some agp issues which were the mobo manufacturers fault.

I bought the Radeon 8500 64MB retail for $75 from BestBuy store (still their current price now if you can find one :)), scored 9850 in 3DMarks2001SE. With this price/value, I doubted any other card can beat it. G4 is good, but I don't want to spend twice, triple or quad money to buy that slightest difference in performance. If I want Nvidia, I would look into G5 or G6 in the future, Radeon 8500 is good enough for this year I believe. ;)

BTW, competition is always good. Without Radeon 8500, I probably will spend another $250 for a Geforce 4 4400, just the same money that I paid for a Geforce 2 Ultra last year, and a Geforce 2 last last year. When I look back today, those price are just way ridiculous high for one year's pleasure.

I must say that I've never been a hardcore supporter of any company. I've had various issues with past ATi products (i.e. Xpert 98, Rage Fury, Radeon 64 VIVO, AIW Radeon). However, the 8500 has been super stable in my system since day 1, and I have yet to experience issues with any of the games I've played. Granted, it's not the fastest card out there right now, but from a price/performance aspect - it can't be beat IMHO. After reading through Anand's Parhelia overview, I think I may actually sit out the next gen of cards and stick with the 8500... it's just that good.

I vote for the 8500 LE....

and for drivers, use Omega's Drivers..... they work better for games, but not as good for benchmarks....

zs

EDIT: Just checked Omega's site.... its not working right now... hmmm....
