I am building a P4 northwood system within a couple of weeks, and I'd like to take advantage of that Gateway coupon which expires today.

Definately the GeForce4. Radeon has shotty driver support from what I read on forums and video card reviews. The GF4 is the latest and greatest, I was so close to picking it up but I'm broker than Enron.

Voodoo 4 for $23 on Egay.

Whoops, my fault, thought you said what's the worst card ever made.

Anyhow, go for the savings with the 8500. Nothing pushes the big boys yet anyhow unless you run at 4000 x 1500. :)

from what i hear... nvidia drivers is not exactly perfect either. if u can afford to buy an overpriced gf4, than more power to you. i am a fan of bang for the buck... and IMHO the 8500 is it (at gateway at least).

I went with the Geforce 4 Ti 4400. My thought is...if it aint broken, don't fix it. Never had a problem with any of my numerous NVIDIA cards that I have gone through (and games which do have problems, usually were fixed with a patch). Plus, if I am able to overclock to near 4600 speads, I can get a video card with twice the performance of the Radeon 8500.

There is no question that there are some advantages to the GF4. however i personally believe that the Radeon currently offers better value for the dollar.

I do CAD at home sometimes.

Geforce4 is the only way to go.

I ordered one early this week.

Damn... $130 for the R8500?!
For that price, I gotta say I'd rather have the $100 savings and stick with the more well rounded if somewhat slower R8500.

actually I just placed my order 5 minutes ago. It went through.

I went with the GF4 Ti4400

it was a hard decision, and I'm sure I'll have some regrets, but I'll live with it.

I was reading on the rage3d.com forums about some problems with the radeon, and knowing that the driver support is not as good, I decided to go with nvidia.

cad and geforce 4? shouldn't you get a professional cad card if cad is really THAT important to you? Besides, since you make it sound like it's only the Geforce 4 can do cad, what did you use before you got it to do your sometimes cad stuff?

I would take the 100 bucks and save it for my next video card upgrade if I were you.

to me it was simple. i kinda wanted to buy the radeon 8500 but after reading the benchmarks im convinced that the geforce4 ti-4400
will give me all i want for the next 18 months and the radeon might give me trouble sooner than that.

plus ive had troubles with my radeon 32 ddr. i dont want to buy another card that will leave me wishing i spent just a little more on the next best.

so i spent the extra 100 and am looking forward to good performance for awhile and not having to worry about it

hey travler, welcome to the forums.

You pretty much summed up what I was thinking. That GF4 Ti4400 should last a long time, especially since most games don't even tax the GF3 cards. I am also presently using a Radeon 32 meg DDR. I felt like going back to nvidia

Well, if you can get a Radeon 8500 for $130 it is a good deal, I don't think the Geforce 4 4400 is gonna be almost twice as fast even though the price is almost double. I recently picked up a Radeon 32MB DDR for $45 shipped and I am impressed. In Unreal Gold it averages 45fps at 1024 x 768 x 32 2X FSAA, got it running 180/180. My Gainward Geforce 2 Ti 500 at 275/521 at 1024 x 768 x 32 4X FSAA hits an impressive 85fps average. But you know what? If it weren't for the little counter on the upper left of the screen I absolutely cannot tell the difference! The Radeon plays all games smoothly and the 7189 drivers have no issues in Win98, it plays just as good as any of my Geforce cards, my kids say it looks better! I was ready to snatch up a Geforce 3 Ti 200 because prices are really low now, but I am just being a dork. If a Radeon 32MB DDR in my kids' computer can play all my games smoothly and look good with no driver issues and impress me, than I guess I have no business upgrading yet.

problems are almost non existant with latest drivers of any card. I'd say take the 8500...it's cheap, fast, and fully supports DX8.1 NOwith PS 1.4 etc etc.

Not to mention DVD decder, better 2D and such.

I'm waiting for some company to rival ATI for the 2D mainstream market. The 8500 is an excellent gamer's card with a good 2D package...the GF3 is an excellent gamer's card with an ok or so so 2D package.

I do 3D graphics/CAD myself, and I am trying to decide which one myself.

I don't know if the latest Radeon drivers would fix most prolbems, so I like Nvida because of that.

However, 4400 also cost $100 more...if ATI's latest driver works fine, then I'd go for ATI and save
the $100 for future upgrade, not to mention better TV-out quality.

Re: Professional cards

Quadro 4 is faster than everything else in SpecViewPerf, including Wildcat 6110, which is 2x as expensive. Since Quadro is based on same chip as GF4, it's shouldn't be too hard to mod it :)
