My friend has a radeon 8500 oem and never with anything else. He had a geforce3 ti200, but got rid of it, so that he could get the radeon 8500 oem instead. The game that gives the trouble is Unreal Tournament, and the mod Tactical Ops. Quake 3 works fine. Tried several different drivers, and also tried tweaking it out, nothing worked.

His system specs are
Pentium 4 1.7ghz
Asus P4T-E
256mb rdram
Sound Blaster 5.1
Seagate Barracuda 40gb hd

Did he correctly remove all traces of nVidia's drivers?

Does he have the latest chipset drivers and BIOS for his system?

Well, the computer was formatted. There shouldnt be any traces of it than. The bios is up to date.

Has he tried the very latest drivers? I would assume by your post that he has, but just checking.

I'm having similar problems myself with the 8500. For me, the stuttering in UT is only for a fraction of a second so it is tolerable..but the stuttering i get in other games such as serious sam 2 stutters for up to five seconds at times. Still can't find a solution to this.

it's called polygon bug.
When there are too much things going on in the screen, the r8500 will do a nose dive in fps...
it's a driver issue i heard from rage3d.
Let's hope they will fix it becasuse this is the only problem i have with the card.

Indeed. I have the same problem. It happens when I see a smoke grenade in CS. The FPS should maybe drop, but the way it happens is very strange. Also, they shouldn't drop so much.

It could be the "polygon" bug the others have mentioned, however, I had some REAL bad stuttering under Windows XP (I assume he's using that, since I didn't have stuttering under Win98) with Unreal tournament.

This happened with all driver versions ..........until the 6025.

Once I installed those drivers , the stuttering finally went away.

If those 6025 drivers don't make the stuttering go away, then the only other suggestion I have is that he go into his "display properties" menu , and uncheck "v-sync" ....which helped a lot with earlier drivers.

Yea, he uses Winxp, the 6025's didnt fix the problem. Was played under Direct3d, he doesnt like opengl. The disabling v-sync didnt help, I think he just wants to return the card now heh.

Similar problem with my niece's machine, an XP home ed., AMD 1.67(XP), 512 DDR, 80gig Maxtor 7200 amd an AIW 8500DV. Get VERY low PCPITSTOP score of of 50 MPS...barely better than my boys 2mg POS (Piece Of..) card. Also getting dropped frames in a star wars battle game. I have an AIW Radeon and my other boy has a Radeon LE that work great.....could it be a driver issue? The ATI site lists only one approved driver for the 8500 on XP.
