radeon 8500 aiw is making me see double trouble

just wondering if any of you have/had/or have heard of this problem with the 8500 aiw along with a fix:

installed latest drivers after installing dx 8.1 on a clean win98se install with latest via 4in1's, mobo drivers and all windoze updates. upon reboot after installing radeon drivers i got a split screen with two identical displays split horizontally, the top display being compressed to 1/3 of the screen and it's clone taking up most of the remainder. i adjusted the resolution and refresh and the screen retuned to normal. i noticed in device manager that the os decided to install a default pnp monitor after i installed the drivers for the monitor i'm using. i removed the default monitor from dvc mgr, de-selected "auto-detect PnP monitor" in advanced properties, rebooted and got into bios where i deselected PnP os, saved and continued the boot. as soon as the os got running the screen was normal but it decided to re-install the default pnp monitor, so i disabled that monitor in dvc mgr. all was well i thought. i then installed a game and latest patch for it. i started it up to see if alls well and that's when the split screen came back. i quit the game and came back to a normal screen. i installed another game and the same thing happened. i checked to see if the radeon drivers options had decided to install a ghost monitor or tv but there was none. curious though, after installing the drivers, a message appeared asking if i would like to set up a tv that it detected. however, i have no tv hooked up to the g-card and it's the only one installed.

ATI driver installs are very picky and likely just by rearranging order of driver instals could have a more positive effect....

I would install

windoze drivers...
mobo drivers...
direct x drivers...
then
catalyst 2.3drivers....

Are you trying to install mmc at same time??? If so go to www.rage3d.com and read the install for the AIW cards....very helpful!!!

duvie, thanks for the help. i'm off to rage3d as soon as i sign off here, and no, i have'nt attempted to install the media center yet, but will try it right after i swat this bug. you da man. 🙂

update: sent a query to ati support and ran dxdiag. sure enough, directdraw full screen mode test recreated the problem, but primary surface test and off-screen test did not. direct draw and direct 3d also recreated the problem. still digesting help files from rage3d.

removed drivers, set back to default monitor and installed older drivers that came with g-card and same problem again.

i'm now wondering if there's a glitch between ati drivers dual monitor/tv option and windows split-screen option. split-screen option in windblows is disabled.

sys specs: soyo kt400 ultra platinum, amd 2400xp, corsair 512mb xms-3200, wd800jb, audigy oem.

anyone else got some info on this time-stealing/ game-stopping problem? 🙂
