Radeon 8500/9100 install problems/debacle

I just swapped out my Geforce2 for a Radeon 8500LE (refurb from Newegg) under win98se.

I didn't delete the detonators first which was probably dumb.

But at any rate, I managed to install the cadalyst 3.6's even though the screen was incredibly garbled upon putting in the radeon (weird geometric things were going on). The screen cleared up upon a restarting with the ATI drivers and I thought I was in the clear too, but when I what card windows thought was installed it was a 9100. I tried reinstalling the drivers, thinking I might have hit some option by accident when I couldn't really see.

However, after doing this the screen took on it's almost unuseable fractal appearance once again. Safe mode works fine, but is of course limited. I tried reinstalling 98se, but on the first reboot, when it's probably not entirely settled yet, the screen when garbled again. I can't fiddle with anything outside of safe mode or the initial install process, because I can't make anything out. Anyway, what do you suggest? I'm going to stick the geforce back in when I get home in a few hours to see if I can at least clear up the install. Did anyone else have this kind of brand switching issues?

Oh yeah, currently the detonators and the ATI drivers are gone and I'm running standard VGA.

Actually what seems to have helped was sticking in an old voodoo3 for a stopgap to get through the installation. Windows still thinks I've got a 9100, but I'm going to run 3dmark and see if that acutally matters.

Well, the prob is 3dmark refuses to run (claiming I don't have DX8.1 (I do) or proper drivers (I probably don't)). Also Unreall is really jumpy. Any suggestions?

rbv5: Thanks, that might account for the mismatch. 3dmark is still not liking my drivers after a DX9b install. I can change the driver listed under adapter in display properties to an 8500 (which I'm assuming would solve the problem) with the "No, let me choose the driver option" but there's three of them listed without any distinction. Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm learing of just picking one because shortly after I did before the screen corruption started again. Thanks.

I wouldn't think it would matter actually, the key here I think is to rid your self of both your nvidia and ATI drivers with drivercleaner as suggested and just follow the installation tips at ATI for the driver installation. Not getting rid of your dets initially sealed your fate I'm sure.
