A 9600Pro would fair much better across the board, but it's still not exactly a speed demon.

To be fair to the R8500, it still holds it's own in today's game so long as you don't crank up the eye candy. I finished FarCry, HL2, and Doom3 with my R8500 just to see if I can do it. Except for Doom3, which I had to run at 800x600, I got more than adequate framerate with this card at 1024x768 using various tweaks and medium settings.

should be fine with every game at 640x480. I dont find 800x600 smooth in Doom 3. Also, you wont be running AA/AF in any new game. Far Cry at 800x600 should be fine. HL2 800x600 all high Details. Unless you can get this card for $40-45, i'd get something faster.

depends on memory/core speeds also, some variants are slower.

I have a 9100 250/250, same as 8500LE. Runs Far Cry, HL2, UT2K4 at 1024 and halo, doom at 640.

Had an 8500 @ 280/280, ran most games adequately at 1024x768 with medium settings with 8x AF. AA is out of the question for that gen of cards. If you wanted to pick between the 8500 and the 9600 Pro, pick the latter. It's relatively way better.
