My little brother just bought himself a Radeon 8500 128MB with his own hard earned money... he's upgrading from a Kyro 2... problem is it doesn't seem to support 1280x960 resolution... i checked the box and it doesn't seem to support it... i find that quite odd since it supports much higher resolutions... he does have an old monitor... do you guys think that's the problem?

Terribly sorry... just found out the native drivers don't support that resolution. I was thinking it was th monitor but the Kyro2 supported it so it was quite odd. Thanks anyway. :)

Well I did some reckless 5 minute regediting and hey it works! Too bad i lost all resolution options above 1280x960... hahaha... would have to go fix that later... :)

I still can't understand why ATi has still not added this resolution to their video cards. It's the correct 4:3 ratio yet they insist on only providing the squashed 1280 x 1024 instead.

I mean really, how hard is it to add in an extra line in the INF file? Any monkey can manage it.

I don't think it's just ATI. The Detonator drivers for my Ti200 didn't have it either, I needed to use a tweaker to enable it..28.xx I believe..
Strange, I've been using NVidia cards for the past few years, and have always been using their Detonator drivers, and have always been able to access 1280x960 without tweaking/hacking/editing.

Same here, working fine with both my nVidia cards and my Voodoo3's, no extra tweaking needed.

If you use a utility to overclock your card like Powerstrip, then you can add a "custom" resolution like 1280x960 if it's not included or any other type. That might be an option for you too. Two things with the same utility.

My bad...haven't used Nvidia cards too much lately...:)

I prefer the Rage3D Tweaker for Radeon cards. It works better than Powerstrip for me, and it's free. While Powerstrip is free for a trial, they keep giving you those "register now" messages. Also, I really like how the Rage3D Tweaker integrates itself into the driver's display properties.... :)

However, both programs will accomplish "unlocking" the resolution...:)

1280 x 960 is not a standard aspect ratio. 1280 x 1024 is the standard in that area. The closest my Radeon 8500 can come to your number is 1280 x 768.

Yes it is. It is the standard 4:3 ratio just like 800X600, 1024X768, 1600X1200......1280X1024 is not the standard 4:3 ratio, its some goofy default. And your Radeon will support 1280X960 with a registry tweak or overclock utility like they say.

I've tried at least 30 different versions of detonator drivers and every single one of them has supported 1280 x 960 right out of the box. If you can't see it, chances are that your monitor INF doesn't have that resolution, in which case all you need to do is to pick another monitor's INF file that includes it.

1280 x 960 is not a standard aspect ratio.
It most certainly is - it's the correct 4:3 ratio that all CRTs require for correctly proportioned images.

1280 x 1024 is the standard in that area.
No it's the incorrect 5:4 ratio which produces squashed and distorted images on a CRT. It is correct for LCDs though.
