I just put a radeon x800 w/512MB ram in my system...and I am having an odd problem. Every 4-5 minutes, my screen blanks out then comes back. This happens in 2D and 3D mode...so do I have a defective card or is there some way to fix this? I am running the artic cooling unit on it, so I doubt that it is overheating...plus it happens in 2D mode.

I just updated to the latest catalyst drivers and that didn't fix anything...and today I got a bsod and my PC rebooted. Any help would be appreciated.

It might be an OC instability.

I know my 6600GT did that when I pumped it up too much.

It could also be a driver problem. Roll back onto some older drivers and see if that fixes it.

I'm not OCing the card and the previous drivers gave me the same problem. Not getting any VPU recover messages either.

I've had similar problems in World of Warcraft with my X800XL (256 MB), but not in 2D mode.

I usually get the VPU recover message, though, and I don't think I've BSOD'd yet.

I'm running Catalyst 5.7 (recently updated to try and solve the problem).

Anyhow, I'm not too happy with the X800XL stability (even got a Zalman cooler to reduce temps and noise), but I do like the performance and the price was good when I bought it.

I had a 9700pro before this card, and it also had some random problems.

Before the 9700pro I had an NV GF3 Ti 200 and before that a GF1 SDR.

Overall the NV cards seemed to work better, but none of the cards were perfect.

The best I can say is to try the latest drivers (sounds like you have already) and check your power supply and make sure it's a quality one with enough power (I like Seasonic supplies the best). Other than that, I'm not really sure what to do. Maybe try a fresh install of Windows in case there are some older drivers in there that are causing conflicts.

You may want to check the temps with a program like ATI Tray Tools or similar. Also, maybe try running at a low resolution to see if the problem still happens. Maybe your monitor is having a problem with the rez and/or refresh rate.

Good luck!

it could be a defective card. try everything else...if it still doesnt rectify the problem try to swap the card into another machine. if the problem still persists just RMA the card.
