I just noticed the 7970 isn't much larger than the 5870 while having twice as many transistors.

Anyway, price for the new king of the hill is aligned with past high end releases. AMD's new CEO seems to be determined to turn things around.

Surprised at the lack of comments from the people who've been vocal about the 7970 positioning versus the 580.

For myself, I think they should have squeezed in a few more CUs and matched the 6970 die size. GCN looks very promising.

Ah, but it's a new process AND a new architecture, something even Intel has permanently moved away from with "tick tock". Too many things can go wrong with that scenario, but I'm actually surprised they are launching first.

If you look at the graphic you'll see that for NVIDIA they had to up the die size for their new node + tweaked Arch to get from 285 to 480.
