Radeon 7000 crashes XP

Hi all. First post 🙂

Really need some help on this one! phew!

Using a radeon 7000 (VE) with a Duron 700 on a Gigabyte 7IXE4 mobo.
The radeon is newer than cpu/mobo. Mobo is a AGP 1x - radeon is AGP 4x as far as i know. Does this matter?

System works ok in safe mode and has also worked ok in KnoppMyth @ 800x600 (could have been using standard VGA drivers though?)

I have tried a couple of other AGP cards and they work ok but their TV out quality is poor compared to the radeon 7000.

upgrade your mobo. agp4x means the vid card only runs agp4x and 2x. agp1x is a different standard and isnt compatible.

Updating BIOS now. hopefully that will work

EDIT: oh yeah, and so is the MOBO

Do you mean mwmorph, that the MOBO only suports AGP rev 1.0 and the video card needs 2.0? cause i think that is the problem. supposedly they can both do agp2x

Does this sound right: this card works ok in standard VGA mode but once it tries to use it's proper drivers it barfs?

No, not a problem. AGP 1.0 doesn't have 4x support, and a lower power budget for the card you plug. Radeon 7000 can do with 2x and even 1x modes (3.3V signalling implied), and also is low enough in power requirements to run well in AGP 1.0 slots.

However, 7IXE4 uses the AMD 750 chipset, and this one has a flaw in the AGP implementation. You need to step back to 1x mode whatever card you plug. AMD's AGP driver for this chipset does this for you. Install it.

Oh right... I had given up hope.

So i should install the AGP driver even though XP comes with it?

I tried to install the above driver. It failed saying it found nothing that needed the drivers.

This is what windows XP automaticaly loaded: device manager / system devices / AMD-751 Processor to AGP Controller

Thanks to your suggestion Peter, I googled and found amd_agp.zip from here: http://www.motherboards.org/mobot/drivers/Gigabyte/

installed it and tada! no more crashing.
