Radeon 6900 wont recognize 2560*1440 monitor

HELP!

I have a Radeon 6900 of some sort, and I upgraded one of my monitors to an Asus PB278Q which is 2560*1440. I used dual link DVI to connect it, but couldn't get it above 1920*1080. From reading online ATI cards don't support that resolution via dual link DVI. So I tried HDMI. But again, I can't seem to change the resolution above 1920*1080. I also tried display port, but the computer doesn't even recognize the monitor is plugged in.

I also can't display on both my old display (via DVI) and the new one at the same time. When I try to extend or duplicate the display on both it says unable to save these display settings. I am able to switch from using one display to the other.

I tried HDMI and displayport with the old monitor disconnected - but basically get the same result: display port doesn't work at all, and HDMI wont go above 1920*1080. Any ideas?

Weird, I searched google about a dozen times and don't seem to find anyone with these kinds of issues.

Via device manager I disabled the Intel HD 4000 graphics, but it still shows up via the system info tool. I'm only plugging monitors into the radeon card. Here is what system info application lists under display:

Both Catalyst Control center and the windows resolution tool indicate maximum resolution as 1920*1080.

I've tried to install the ASUS driver but windows seems to reject it - it wants to use the generic PnP monitor driver.

I forced windows to accept the Asus display driver, and rebooted. No change.

You are probably using the wrong cable. Maybe the cable you have is a DVI Single Link. You actually need DVI-D Dual Link.

I was using Triple 1440p monitors when I had my TriFire HD 6970. Was running 8044x1440 at 60fps with DVI-Dual Link cables.

BUT, after playing with HDMI and display port for a while, and having no success, I plugged the DVI cable back in and it works!

So, I got a second Asus PD278Q monitor.

And again, my computer doesn't recognize it as having a resolution of 2560*1440. The first one is running fine at that resolution, the second one maxes out at 1920*1080. I triple checked - I am using a Dual link DVI-D cable. I've tried everything I can find via google - in terms of changing registry settings etc. I also have tried a bunch of times to turn the PC on before or after the monitor / unplugging and then trying again. And I'm using the ASUS monitor drivers.

Any suggestions?

it doesnt support it doesnt mean you cant do it.

bring up nvpanel or ati 3d party and create custom res,,,

I ran into similar but slightly different problems, and at various times I got "stuck" where I actually had to power off the monitor, then power it back on to "reset" the monitor itself. After doing that, my computer was able to detect it.

This solution particularly applied when switching between DVI and Displayport. I also saw the "unable to save this display setting" or whatever when I tried to get all three monitors supported while using DVI on the 2560x1440. But when I used the displayport (after rebooting/resetting the monitor) on that monitor, then it was fine.

I think it's some kind of bug in the hardware or driver. But anyway, try to reboot the monitor itself, just unplug it from everything including the AC power.

AMD cards don't routinely have more than 1 DL-DVI port, so it's likely that you are using a single link port. Check the specs of your card. You 'may' be in luck since the 6990 is dual GPU, but I fear I know what the answer willbe...

Ah-ha! Thank you! You are correct. I downloaded the ATI user manual for a 6950 video card. Indeed, only one of the ports is dual link DVI. In hindsight, checking the video card user manual should have been one of my first steps. Doh!

It also probably explains why I had trouble with the first monitor via DVI - I must have at one point switched which DVI port I used for the monitor, and it only worked after I had made that switch.

It doesn't explain why display port didn't work for the first monitor. The video card manual does indicate that I can mix dual link DVI (or single link DVI) with display port. My card has mini-display port, and I have a mini display port to regular display port adapter, I believe I got it with the card. Perhaps I need an active display port adapter instead of the adapter that I have, which is probably passive.

I'll try display port again this evening with the second monitor.

You shouldn't need an active adapter to go from mini displayport to displayport. I'm not even sure they exist. Maybe you have a defective adapter or cable?

Check the specs of your specific 6990, not of the 6950 or of any other card

In case others find this thread in the future: I bought a new mini-display port to display port cable and it is working great. My mini - display port to display port adapter, or the display port cable must have been to blame.
