hey

I think it's time for me to upgrade from my Voodoo 3 2000 video card. what do u guys suggest for a new video card? I was thinking about the radeon 32mb DDR LE because of the price, but would it be a big step up from my voodoo 3? if it isnt, i was thinking about the radeon 64mb ddr as an alternative, but it costs twice as much. but then i noticed that the geforce 2 MX had good prices as well, but I heard that they sucked?

what do you guys think?

also, what are the radeon drivers like? i heard radeon has problems with VIA chipsets, which i use, and problems with win2k? and does the ati radeon 64ddr VIVO alllow me to watch tv through my computer on cable?

There is no point in buying the LE.

I also had this dilemma, and I decided to buy the Radeon 64MB DDR.

About two weeks ago I was in the same situation. I ended up replacing my Voodoo3 3000 with a Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO & couldn't be happier! 😀

the latest win 2K drivers for the Radeon are really nice (.3226) I bought a Radeon LE and after some extensive testing, turned it into a Radeon 32MB DDR card. It is really overclockable as well from 148 to 190. Total cost of the card including shipping (2nd day) was $88 three months ago. I do not know about the GF cards but the LE has the following advantages

1. Cheap for a 128bit DDR card
2. Overclockablity
3. Can turn it into a Radeon 32MB
4. Newest Win 2K drivers are great

Actually, like the guy that posted right after you said, there is really good reasons to buy a RADEON LE.
1) radeon LE better than geforce mx and costs less (visual quality better, about same speed)
2) Very overclockable and already cool- can go from 143mhz to 166mhz or 183mhz EASILY
3) Same chipset as the Radeon 32mb ddr, ATI just turned the memory/core speed down- that is why it is easy to overclock
4) great visual quality
5) much better win 2k drivers

GET A RADEON LE DR 32 MB OEM. it is only like $80 U.S.

thanks guys

well someone said that going from voodoo3 2000 to radeon LE isnt a big step-up, so there isnt really a good reason to get the radeon LE.

do you guys know about the VIVO on the radeon 64ddr? can you watch cable TV on it?

Going from a Voodoo 3 2000 to a Radeon VE is a huge jump in performance. However, the difference in performance between a Radeon 64MB and the Radeon VE is almost nothing if you overclock your VE up to speed. It will OC because it was originally manufactured for the higher speed. So it's really not overclocking. It's just running at it's originally intended speed. You'll get almost the same performance. However, the 64 meg card does have a lot of nice features the VE doesnt.
Check out the benchmarks on anandtech's.

The VE is your best bet for a card under $80. If you are willing to spend about $100, you can get the Kyro II or the Geforce 2 GTS. For about $130, you can get a Geforce 2 Pro.

That person should be disposed of immediately. I would personally get a Geforce2, the detonater 4 drivers will be out soon.

Transistor you mean the LE, not the VE that performs poorly.

ignore transistor for this thread, he's got it ass backwards....

the LE, not VE, is what he's inquiring about.

anyway, the LE flashed (or oc'd and registry hacked) into a standard DDR 32MB radeon is a big step up from a voodoo 3...

the radeon 32mb DDR to 64MB ddr is not a huge step up...

if u really don't wanna spend double the money (i know i wouldn't), i'd go radeon LE.

The Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO has a composite in but I'm not sure you can watch TV with it, I have not had time to test it.

the "VIVO" in "Radeon 64 mb VIVO" stands for "video IN, video out". it does indeed have a tv input.
however, i believe that part of the reason that the AIW was made is because you need a tv card in order to watch tv on your monitor, though i may be wrong. it is my understanding that the video in on the VIVO allows a static input, like a camcorder, to be used, but a tv card is needed to change channels, volume, etc.

maybe, if u change channels, etc. on the t.v. itself and simply use the monitor as output...which seems pointless..nonetheless, u won't be able to control t.v. features from your comp w/ out a t.v. tuner (i.e. on the AIW)...

doesn't it have both s-video and composite in?...do most t.v.s even supoort composite/s-video out?...i think not.

The VIVO capturing is done with a Rage Theater chipset. But there is no sound input capability, so you need to use your sound card for sound recording with the video. If you do a lot of video capturing, there are standalone cards that offer better quality capturing. The ATI VIVO cards are pretty decent for the extra $$, though.

I think the LE is fine for a while because you can get it shipped from Newegg for $73. That's an outstanding price. One registry hack and one tweak program later, you're running at 183 MHz with Hyper-Z enabled. Very fast. If you want to overclock much higher, you can even get a cooling kit.

The ONLY disadvantage to the LE (other than the easy overclocking work) is that it's only a 32 meg card, which means that brand spankin' new games are going to run out of texture space more easily. This will only get worse with time, which is why a lot of people are getting 64 meg cards. But hey, I still think you can't beat this deal for $73!

actually, games are only JUST starting to be optimized for 32mb video memory...which is roughly 24mb allocated to texture memory...

by the time games are being made to really make use of higher texture memory, u'll have upgraded your video card 2 times over...so there's no worries there.

Yes indeed, If you plug your vcr into video in you got a tuner and your watching TV. My Brother does it all the time ATi soft ware lets you have a little biddie window on tha desktop so you can surf and keep an eye on the tube! Also his 64ddr radeon just ROCKS! everything turned on in games, it just laughs at the workload. Great picture lots of fps like 80 to 100fps maxed out in 32bit. Plus his front bus is at 140mhz so it can do that too.
