Radeon 5xxx

I read somewhere it may hit shelves this summer to combat Nvidia's last gpu for the gtx200b series, before they release dx11 cards in q4 09.
 
Don't scare me because I remember what happened with GeForce 5xxx series. ATI should release the Radeon 6xxxx series instead just to be safe! 😉
 
^ lol haha well we'll see how long it takes nvidia to move up to gddr5 if anytime soon that's the only thing i beleive that ati has on them currently... am i wrong ?

btw is an e2200 @ 2.9 ghz sufficent to push a 8800 GT @ 1024 x 768 (17" crt)

I think ATI has done well with it's strategy as far as low to middle high end cards. The R800 is going to be an improvement on the R700 design which itself was an improvement on the R600 design. I've heard something like 2000(!) SPs with ATI marketing pushing the idea of a 12 month product cycle on their cards. Seeing as the R700 was launched in June 2008 the R800 is probably coming June 2009.

I don;t know where you heard April 2009 for Nvidia's release, I've alwars heard 2nd half of June 2009 for both Nvidia and ATI releases.

As far as naming, the HD5800 might actually fit. Wtih 2000 SPs, even at 40nm, it's not going to be a low power chip considering the R700 isn't exactly a low power chip, with 800 stream processors at 55nm. I wouldn't besurprised if the reference cooling solution for the 5800 is loud and exhausts air out the back. I have a 48701GB on hand in my case and it's plenty loud at load(though drowned out by my other 6 fans in the case).

I wouldn't be shocked if the next AMD card has ~2k SP's. Think about it, their 55nm chip is about half the size of Nvidia's 55nm chip. When both companies shrink to 40nm AMD will have a lot of physical size to add if they choose to. They are already competitve with a die half the size, so if they want to make their die a bit larger then half size they could really add to the specs.
