Radeon 5870 and Silverstone LC10B-E ATX Media Center Case?

I'm looking to build a gaming/HTPC hybrid machine. This will be hooked up in my living room to a 58" Panasonic plasma that I also use for gaming.

Ideally I'd like to use a Radeon 5870, although I would consider a 5850 if I can't get the 5870 to fit. The case I'm looking at is the Silverstone LC10B-E ATX Media Center. This seems like a pretty big HTPC case, so it seems like it might work.

Any thoughts if this card would work in this case?

Thanks in advance.

Looking at the pics on Newegg, I'd doubt it. It seems like the drive cages sit pretty much flush with the edge of the motherboard. ATX spec width is 9.6", and the 5870 is about 10.6" long. Unless the middle drive cage is removable, I don't think it will work. Are you set on that case? If so, the 5850 might work at 9.5", but you'll still have to snake the PCI-e power connectors through that cage since they plug into the front of the 5850. If you're looking for an overall "reserved" case to use as an HTPC, you might want to check out the Lian-Li V351: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16811112222 , as it does fit a 5870 (also comes in aluminum-colored and red).

In the manual it shows all the drive cages are removeable. With the center HD cage out I'd think you should be able to fit it.

Of course that would only leave space for 4 hard drives. 3 in cage and 1 above optical drive :)

Thanks for the feedback - that's really helpful. I'm not dead set on the Silverstone case, but it sounds like it should work if pull out the center HD cage. Four hard drives will be more than enough - likely only start with two. The Lian Li case looks nice as well.

My i7 with the same MB is currently housed in a lc17. I think the internal layout of the case you are considering is the same. My two Club 3d hd 4850's fit, although it's a tight squeeze. However, be warned, if the lc10 is the same as the lc17, by removing the middle cage, you also lose the possibility of installing a fan at the front of the case, which, for the i7, is highly recommended. I suggest you investigate further. Personally, when I upgrade to the 5800 series I'll probably relocate to a Panzerbox and overclock a bit - there is no way you can overclock in either of these Silverstone cases as a Zalman 9500 is the tallest cooler that will fit.

Don't get me wrong, I love the lc17, but you should be aware of the limitations entailed when building a htpc.

The Panzerbox case looks really nice but unfortunately will be too tall for where I need to house it. Any other options for a large, horizontally orientated case?

I poked around Newegg for a while and came up with this case: LIAN LI Black Aluminum PC-C33B ATX Media Center Link. It seems that this may be a little bigger than the Silverstone. Perhaps an easier fit for the 5870?

You'd have to remove that lower hard drive cage and fan for the 5870 to fit. If that is gone then you can fit any size video card into the case, but if it's installed looks like the maximum length for a card would be less than 10".

Are you referring to the Lian Li PC-C33B? I'm leaning towards this case but wanted to make sure.

I was on the auto-notify list for an ASUS Radeon 5870 at newegg and they came in yesterday. I decided to go ahead and pull the trigger:

I ordered the:

Lian Li PC-C33B
ASUS 5870
COOLER MASTER Silent Pro 700 RS-700
LG Blu-ray burner

I have a 2TB Hitachi drive coming from Dell and a second Seagate 1.5TB drive that I will install, so that should provide a lot of room for media.

I have an old EVGA nVidia 680 motherboard with an E8400 and 4GB DDR2 that I'm not using after I upgraded my main rig to a i7 920, so I'm going to use this for now.

I should have all the parts by the end of the week and will hopefully get the build done over the weekend. I plan to install Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

Using the Lian LI PC-C33B case, I got the rig built on Friday. GOOD NEWS - the Radeon 5870 fit without having to make an mods to the case. It was close but it fit perfectly.

The Lian LI looks to be a really good option for someone wanting this card in a HTPC type case. The case has a lot of room and it made it very easy to build the machine.

I installed Windows 7 Home Premium and then hooked up the system via HDMI to my Yamaha receiver to the Panasonic plasma. To my surprise everything worked perfectly - audio, video, etc.
