hey! im new to building computers (about 6-7 weeks in) i came across a card in a freinds basement and took it home super excited to play some SC2 on it.

plugged it in and no go. it boots, i download the drivers and restart and then wont boot again. (stuck on the windows logo till it tries to reboot itself again)

tried re-downloading the drivers using one of amd's driver inhalation programs but still no go.

any help would be much appreciated!!!
let me know idk how to do these haha thnx in advance!!

Ah the 4870X2. Great card but a power guzzler!

So...what is your PSU? Have you connected both the 6pin and the 8pin?

Does it boot in safe mode?

Above all, are you sure it was in working order in the first place?

ps welcome to the forums and to the pc world.

SC2 does not take advantage of multiple GPU's.

but a single 4870 should be enough to play it well,

also considering the 4870 X2 didn't get the frame pacing updates not using dual GPU is probably not a huge deal (and the game is DX9 anyway)

as for the card not working, you should probably ask your friend if it being defective was not the reason for its retirement, make sure you try an older driver or something, start win on safe mode and remove the ones you installed

It should be, but just bringing it up, because at least early on, crossfire was slower than a single card, and lots of people were complaining about stability and graphical anomalies in both SLI and crossfire setups. So, assuming there is a way to disable the 2nd GPU, he'll want to do that before playing SC2.

I have one of these cards still - had issues since I got it. I think the primary GPU is bad, and as I recall you cannot disable the primary GPU, only the secondary one. It works fine in Windows, but benchmarking or stressing it with a modern game causes it to fail.
