I'm thinking about getting a radeon 4870 x2 for cheap and crossfire it with my existing 4870. My question is would the system see it as a tri-crossfire? Or will it work only as if I only have 2 4870 running in crossfire?

what year is this? really why on earth would you fool with such a silly old setup at this point? sell the 4870 and put that towards getting a modern video card with better features, more vram, and no crossfire issues. even a little 650 ti boost will give you a better overall gamepaly experience. I sure hope the rest of your pc is up to date though.

yes it will see it as Tri-fire. The setup will be limited to the lowest amount of ram for each respective GPU. The X2 has 1 gb to each gpu but it is rather likely that you have a 512 meg 4870 as they were much more common but only you know =). With that said, the set-up will be hot, loud and power hungry. Performance will vary from great to poor. Depending on how cheap you actually get the X2 for it would be fun to try out Trifire 4870's. I actually have 2 X2's, 3 4870 512's and even a 4890 1 gig. There are times when the X3 and X4 setup are screaming fast but there were other times it was just plain screaming and even caused me to do some screaming.

I am sure it will see it as a tri-crossfire, I had a similar setup didn't work very well, better off going with a different setup.
