I only play at 1024x768 so is there any point for me to get the 64mb version whens theres only a small difference in fps? Especially when the 32 version is about $50 less then the 64 version.
FPS wise there really isn't much a difference. I just purchased a Radeon 64 because it has the VIVO capability which the 32 meg one didn't. Other then that there wasn't a real noticable difference in benchmarks that I saw.
Hmm, doesn't the Radeon do FSAA like the GF ? If it does you might want that memory for FSAA as it renders at 1600x1200 and then 'shrink' the image, I think that would require the memory to render at 1600x1200x32 if you wnat to run at 1024x768x32 with FSAA, but I'm not sure.
If the 64 MB board is only a little bit more expensive than the 32 MB one, get it. If it costs a lot more don't worry about it. The 32 MB board will be fine, especially if you use texture compression.
only good example i can think of now is Unreal Tournament. With 32mb and 1024 with 32bit (what i use) there is a huger slowdown with ppl in screen if u set details high both for players and world texture level. That problem will be gone with 64 mb or if u use one of them to be medium or 16-bit color depth.
If the difference is up to you then u have to think about what you want. 64mb also has VIVO (video in video out) and it might be better for future games with more complex textures. For me 32mb was right for both perforamance and price.
I subscribe to the "more is better" theory. As games start to have more and larger textures, I would think more video memory would be a benefit.
So would it better to have 64mb so it would work better for games in the future? BTW if i get the 64mb one, its gonna be OEM since i have no use for the VIVO functions
I have the 64 retail and have never used the VIVO stuff. The retail comes with better ram (5.5ns Vs. 6ns) and is clocked at 183 Vs. 166 for OEM. If you look around, you can get retail for the price of an OEM. Buy.com sells retail cards for $188. There are coupons if you qualify. Take a look over at techbargains dot com (cant use that word here).
Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any $30 off coupons for buy.com that aren't expired.....anyone know of some that are still valid so that the 64MB Radeon goes for close to $150---that would be too sweet.
The great deals seem to have dried up since last year. Buy.com is getting stingy with coupons. Onvia no longer does free shipping and the prices are WAY up. Now Outpost only ships free orders over $100.
