Radeon 32 DDR freezes in Q3A..... (SOLVED) Now UT is unstable! (SOLVED)

I just installed my Radeon DDR in a fresh install of Win2K SP1. I used the 2K-714-8031.exe file which extracted the drivers and installed them. I know it's a driver problem because I uninstalled the drivers and then install the drivers off the CD and the freezing problem went away, but the textures in Q3A were all corrupted! I went back to the 2K-714-8031.exe drivers and noticed if I take it really easy in the game (don't stress the card) the computer won't freeze for awhile. It freezes right away when I run a timedemo. I heard that I need to disable the ATIGART and ATIPOLAB files, but I don't know how to do it in WIN2K (no msconfig). What are some pointers on getting this card to work?

I have an AMD IRONGATE chipset (from AMD not VIA!) and installed the latest AGP and EIDE drivers for the chipset from the AMD website.
TBIRD 750
256mb PC100 Cas2
Win2K SP1

Drivers:
D714-0831a-628-SPD
5.0.3043

KTX on
Page flipping on
Anisotropic texture filtering: off

I don't know much of anything about this card.
Thanks in advance!

BTW, where can I get the elusive 7041's for Win2K? I am downloading the 5.12.7021 version right now; how do they work? Rage3d.com is down and I can't find them at Zoiah or at ATI's site (the latest supported drivers are .3035). Thanks again!

Thanks Yakko - looks like I have to dig out DX7. How do I uninstall DX8? I am going to try to install DX7 right over and see what happens.

If you can find a way besides format let me know. Luckily I just built my machine so formatting will not cause any real loss except for time. I did also find out in the building of this machine that the Radeon does not seem to work in Win98 first or second edition.

Well, I'm back after another clean install (no DX8 this time :) ) and I still have the same problem. I guess I will have to try another driver until I can find one that is stable. This card is by far the crankiest card I have ever dealt with. Any other suggestions?

Wow. That will be news to the 10s of thousands who are running it! Certainly it's operator error, take a look in the mirror to see the problem.

I installed UT in D3D for the hell of it; the game was the smoothest I have ever seen! It was pegged at 60fps at all times. The MX I had would fluctuate in fps alot, which made the game jerky. There was also alot of artifacting with the MX.

I need an opinion from other Radeon users: Should I switch back to the dreaded Win9X(ME)? I love Win2000, but I don't want to return this card. I figure in a year I will have to switch back to 2000 because Whistler will take over - by then maybe the ATI drivers will be better...

Thanks again all.

The most stable Win2K drivers for games are these
leaked drivers (9.2MB) over at 3Dchipset.
Now that you have installing new drivers down to a fine art,
it couldn't help to install them. Last thing to do is
to go over to www.rage3d.com for a myriad of help from their
forums, articles, and installation guides. These drivers
reportedly are within 10% of the Win98/ME drivers in terms
of games performance.

P.S. To download, do a "shift+left mouse button" click on
the "download link".

PeAK- the performance of the Radeon DDR under Win2K is good, it's just that I can't get the machine stable. Q3A and UT both lock up within 5 minutes (Q3A usually locks up within the first minute). The funny thing about it is that the original drivers that came with the CD didn't lock up the machine but had awful texture problems that made the game look really bad. This make me think that it's not a hardware problem but a driver problem. I just looked at the Rage3D forums and noticed that 99% of the people are using Win9X or ME. Before I give up on this card I am going to try out ME again to see if I can get this thing stable. I love the stable FPS without the dips of the other cards.
Thanks/

I got around the Quake 3 problem by installing WinME and the latest ME driver, but now UT crashes to desktop with a "Critical Error". I have disabled ATIPOLAB and ATIGART - I have upgraded UT to v4.32 with the Inoxx and Bonus Packs. The lockups are random, but they happen everytime within 5 minutes of the game. I am using D3D and DX7. Are there any tricks to get this card to work with UT? Thanks again.

Apparently the Radeon is very sensitive to FSB..... First I had it running at 114*7 on my Irongate for 798 (Ran very stable with Win2K, V5 5500 and GF2 MX), then I lowered it to 107*7 for 749mhz and Quake 3 ran fine but UT didn't. I then lowered it to stock 7*100 and just got done playing five rounds of CTF in UT. This card is so SMOOTH in UT! Time to put this to rest. Thanks all. I hope this helps someone else out there.

Actually this is completely untrue.

It's completely true for this Radeon at least. Both the V5 5500 and the GF2 MX worked at 114mhz without locking up. I put the Radeon in and no dice. So you really can't say that it is *completely* untrue. I'm sure there are other Radeons that are sensitive to FSB.
