Radeon 2900xt owners - what are your temps?

I was just wondering what the max observed temp other radeon 2900xt owners have seen on their cards while playing graphic intensive games (like FEAR, Lost Planet, GTR2, etc.)

The highest temp I've seen my card go was about 78 C. While that's quite hot, it's not quite as hot as I've seen some reviews have claimed (about 90C - though I can't quite remember where I saw that figure). The 78 C was observed on a ~85 F day, in a closed case with 2 intake fans and 1 blowing out, using AMD's GPU clock tool.

What's the highest temp the rest of you 2900 owners have seen?

78*C is not bad at all. I've seen lots of GTX owners claiming much higher temps than that.

My X1900XTX gets to around 82*C with the race car fan at 100%.

thats great, what case do u use? got pics of cable management?

my x1900xt idles @ 39C and after playing an hour or 2 of Cs:source is 60. Room temp is 70-75F

I use the Antec SX1040 soho case. It's nice but nothing fancy.

As for my cable management, it consists of plugging cables into the proper holes...so pretty much nothing great :p

39 C sounds amazing. I don't think even my Core 2 idles at that temp while my 2900 usually hovers around 55-58 C idle. Well, as long as my video card doesn't melt itself I'm fine with these temps. Although sometimes I worry the plastic covering over the hsf will start warping. If the backplate of the heatsink can burn to the touch, I can only imagine how hot the main part of it gets.

well i have a vf-900cu installed and its mounted with my mb upside down in my lian li v1000 case so the heatpipes are oriented for best heat transfer (upwards)

My 2900XT is around 65C at the moment, which is probably a good idle temperature. I haven't checked the load temps yet.

Where do you check the temp?

I've got to have the worst case for cooling...

A standard old Aopen case worth about $30 with one fan blowing air *out* the back...

i have two in corssfire and right this very moment im showing 66 and 57. when gaming though, i do have one card peeking at around 90 degrees and i dont even have the side on my case. i think allot of my issue is airflow because i have two cards stacked right on top of each other but ive heard plenty of people say they are at 80 degrees on one card. i mentioned it to ati customer support and he said 80 degrees was normal under load. i think allot of it just has to do with how good of airflow you have in the case, these things suck us massive amounts of air.

With good case airflow and 74F a/c room-ambient, my card gets to 75/65C load (core/pcb) under games. The idle temps drop almost immediately because of the 2D/3D clock thing and the amount of exhaust air the cooler moves. I think the cooler is great--sure, it could be quieter, but it seems to do its job well.

For comparison, my HD2900XT load temp is about 20C higher than my GTO; idle is maybe 15C higher. This thing puts out a lot of heat, but it's not a problem if you have good airflow.

I haven't tried ATITool for real heat/power stress-testing.

To check your temps, you should download AMD GPU Clock Tool.

Oh of course.. I swapped out the 300W Aopen PSU with a Cooler Master 850W..

I'm getting (in my cheap Aopen QF45A case with one fan blowing out, none blowing in)..

Min: 53C
Max: 77C

And trust me... the cable routing inside is NOT a work of art..

I have two in Crossfire as well and they start out at around 68(ish). Once I start playing an intensive game though, the temps typically jump up to ~88 or 90. I will be adding some more fans this weekend though to hopefully cool things down.

Cheers,
KT

PS: what are you guys using to monitor your temps? I normally use ATITool, but the 2900XT is not supported yet, so I need something to get me through until they release an updated version. :(

Yeah, that sounds like a small airflow problem. Let us know how it works out!

To check your temps, you should download AMD GPU Clock Tool.

To do temperature monitoring, you must go to the second tab and check the boxes to enable the thermal sensors. Then you can click on the button to start temperature monitoring, and it will log high/low/average temperatures as well as display the current temperature. Pretty cool, IMO.

Wow, awesome. I did not even know that existed! I will do that as soon as I get home.

Now I just need to dig up those old case fans I have lying around...

Thanks,
KT

WTF, if you're gonna quote card and room temperatures, at least use the same scale/units so theres some relevance.

http://www.wbuf.noaa.gov/tempfc.htm. 84 F =~ 29.444444444444446 C

If you have time to bitch, you have time to google it. That took me a whole, what, 10 sec?

Anyways, it seems ~53 C is avg idle temp while ~ 78-80 C is avg max temp. Sounds pretty good...and ya that cooler is pretty efficient. Right after exiting games, if I try to quickly check the temps in AMD GPU tool, it's already cooled down to the 60 C range.

You don't even have to go to NOAA.gov (although, I do love that web page); google will perform unit conversion just by searching. For our example, I typed

84 f to c.

But, back on topic, my r600 was about 60/85 with the stock cooler, and it's 38/50 with a Maze4.

BTW, does anyone know how I could get an extra red plastic shroud for this card? I'd like to trim one to fit over the tubing and allow the blower fan to work in conjunction with the waterblock.
