Do these things work? I've heard from some people that they don't, yet others say that they work. What do you think?

The only one I trust is the Velentine One. Saved my butt many times. They are not fool proof and you must use it to your advantage since cops know people have them. There are many strategies to reduce the chances of getting a ticket but it'll never eliminate them. The best piece of Smokey busting hardware is still the Mother Nature Eyeball MK1.

I used to use a radar detector. It did save me once or twice. I won't buy another one unless it's a Valentine One. The best strategy is to pay attention at all times, and don't speed when it's not appropriate. In other words be smart. I recommend picking up a book called the Speeder's Guide to Avoiding Tickets. I don't remember the author's name, but search for it by title. It's written by a retired New York state trooper, it's very informative, and pretty funny. I havn't seen it since my last move :(

EDIT: Here's the link at Amazon.

Whats the others said. All other units are inferior to a valentine, but even it isnt a sureway way to avoid a ticket.

Think of it this way. When your detector goes off, that means they have either hit you with a laser or the radar. If it is radar, it is a better chance you will get away. If they are using laser, your pretty much screwed and you should pray they get the guy infront of you or behind you.

Actually no, because the radar gun the police use, detects the bounced wave which has to go twice the distance. Consequently the detector has twice the range (in perfect conditions) to pickup the signal before it peters out.

Anyone got a link for these Valentines?

Radar/Laser Jammers are useless pieces of junk. They do not put out enough power to jam anything. In Car and Driver they once tested one and their simulated trap was not fooled one by any vehicle including a 10speed bike rigged with 12V power to run one of them. The only jammers that trult work are ones you build yourself (someone in Minnesota does it) but are completely illegal because they violate many FCC regulations or you could steal a military jamming pod. Unfortunatly those badboys put out enough radiation to microwave a 20ln turkey in about 5 minutes and get so hot they cannot be turn on unless air is vented through it.

Yes, my Valentine has helped me out quite a bit on road trips. Though, I admit I use those type things to know more about road conditions and hazards than for speeding. Another good tool is a Police/Emergency band scanner. They'll tell you more about law enforcement activity than you'll ever get from a radar detector (you'll find out exactly where they're sitting).

Do you really want to know how to avoid speeding tickets (I'm part-time Five-O so I know) ;)? Donate $$$ to the FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) whenever they're having a fund raiser. They'll give you some FOP stickers... place one on your license plate and one on your windshield. That way the officer knows you have a connection with the police force and will be a little less annoyed with you. This is no joke, several times I've seen a person almost get ticketed and leave without one because they have an FOP sticker. This doesn't always work, but there is a high likelihood that it will. Not to mention it is a pretty worthy cause and goes toward helping civic programs that the Govt won't finance.

What? You laugh? Try it, it won't hurt anything... but once you see it in action, you'll never sneer at it again.
